UFC implements new rules for cutmen and corners

Kru Phill Nurse is the Vaseline Master

We here at PRO MMA (http://promma.info) told you about the controversy surrounding UFC 94’s main event and Georges St. Pierre’s corner-man, Kru Phil Nurse, putting Vaseline on his back.

If you have been away from the Internet this past week then you have missed the fallout from that incident with the message boards, airwaves, and chat rooms filled with talk of grease, pre-fight oil baths, and rematches. The story continues to unfold as now the UFC has gotten involved and decided to implement some changes to the rules regarding a fighter’s corner while a bout is in progress.

According to new reports, the UFC has banned all corner-men from handling Vaseline used in between rounds to treat and prevent cuts on the fighters. Instead, the UFC will provide one cut man for each corner during the fight and the handling of the Vaseline will be his job. A maximum of two people are allowed to be inside the Octagon in a fighter’s corner between rounds (including the cut man).

B.J. Penn accepts Georges St. Pierre and Greg Jackson’s challenge of a rematch

Who would have thought so much aftermath would have resulted from a “little grease?” To the average person what Georges St. Pierre’s corner-man did may not seem like much but what it does is taint the victory with doubt. Shortly after the Vaseline was applied to St. Pierre and rubbed on his shoulders and back, round two started and Penn found himself on his back with St. Pierre in his guard and his legs actually slide from a high to low guard multiple times where the slippery substance was applied.

Following the incident, St. Pierre and his trainer, Greg Jackson have denied any wrong doing and have offered a rematch to ‘The Prodigy’ who lost by TKO when his corner stopped the Welterweight Title Fight after round four against St. Pierre last Saturday night. B.J. Penn has now accepted the rematch offered by St.Pierre and Jackson.

Hughes comments on Georges St. Pierre vs. B.J. Penn

On his official blog, former UFC Welterweight champion Matt Hughes commented on the Vaseline situation surrounding Georges St. Pierre’s victory over B.J. Penn at UFC 94.

Penn’s camp has decided to file a formal complaint to the Nevada State Athletic Commission alleging that GSP’s corner knowingly used Vaseline on the champion’s upper body.

Having beaten and lost to both men, Hughes brings up a few interesting points in regards to this situation. Hughes states in his blog that he does not believe St. Pierre did anything wrong in the bout; however, he does not seem surprised that GSP felt ‘greasy.’
