Houston Alexander out of UFC 98

PRO MMA (promma.info) has learned from multiple sources that Houston “The Assassin” Alexander (8-4) has pulled out of his UFC 98 bout with Andre Gusmao (5-1) due to a broken hand suffered in training.

Alexander joins three other fighters, James Irvin, Josh Koshcheck and Yushin Okami, who have also pulled out of the card due to injury. Gusmao is still on the card and Krztsztof Soszynski has been confirmed as the replacement for Alexander.

Alexander was in dire need of a win after losing three straight fights to James Irvin, Thiago Silva and Eric Schafer. Alexander shocked everyone by knocking out top ten fighter Keith Jardine in the first round of his Octagon debut at UFC 71. He followed that up with another first round destruction of Alessio Sakara at UFC 75.

Frank Mir is out, winner of Gonzaga vs. Carwin could get shot at Lesnar at UFC 98

The ink is barely dry on the bottom line of the paper that would unify the UFC Heavyweight Title. Now it seems the unification will have to wait until Interim Champion Frank Mir (12-3) can recover from injury.

The rematch between Mir and UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar (3-1) was announced by the UFC earlier in the week, but today MMAweekly.com is reporting that sources indicate a knee injury will prevent Mir from competing in the UFC 98 main event slated for May 23.

Josh Koscheck talks UFC 95 & getting back in the cage

It is hard to believe Josh Koscheck (12-4,10-4 UFC) has been in the UFC for four whole years, but he has. His first fight in the organization was against Chris Sanford in April ’05 at the original Ultimate Fighter Finale. In fact all but two of Koscheck’s professional fights have been in the UFC.

The only names he had lost to were names everyone is familiar with, big names, Fickett, St. Pierre, Alves. Koscheck has been in there with the toughest guys in the world, so when he was matched up with the unknown Paulo Thiago (11-0) at UFC 95, who was making his UFC debut, Koscheck was none too worried.
