Chael Sonnen got his belt

Sonnen punches Filho at the belt

by:  Jack Bratcher

Chael Sonnen revealed to host Larry Pepe last night on Pro MMA Radio that he had indeed received the WEC Middleweight Belt from Paulo Filho following his defeat of the overinflated Filho at WEC 36 on November 5th.

Originally scheduled as a WEC Middleweight Title Fight, Filho could not make the 185 lb. weight limit and therefore according to the rules the bout could not be a title fight.

If you wondered why Paulo Filho looked flat during the fight (understatement of the year) the answer most certainly lies in his problems trying to make weight.

Could Robbie Lawler be headed to the UFC?

by: Jack Bratcher

Robbie Lawler left the UFC in 2004 after two straight losses, first to Nick Diaz at UFC 47 by KO and then to Evan Tanner (R.I.P.) at UFC 50 by Triangle Choke. At the time he was still fairly young and brash.

Now think about this for a moment, since Robbie Lawler left the UFC in 2004 he has lost, count em’…one fight, that’s right, to Jason “Mayhem” Miller (where the hell is he?). And even that was two years ago.

ELITEXC STRIPS KJ NOONS OF LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE

Press Release:

Belt Taken Away For Refusing To Fight Nick Diaz

LOS ANGELES (Sept. 19, 2008) – KJ Noons of San Diego has been stripped of his EliteXC lightweight title. The announcement was made late Friday by EliteXC Head of Fight Operations, Jeremy Lappen.

The foremost reason EliteXC is taking this action, Lappen said, was due to Noons’ reluctance to defend against leading 160-pound contender Nick Diaz of Stockton, Calif.

“We are stripping KJ of his championship belt for refusing to defend against Diaz,’’ Lappen said. “It’s a very unfortunate situation but we cannot have belt-holders who refuse to fight the top contenders. We want champions who will fight anyone, anytime, anyplace. That’s the mentality all champions should have.

“I feel very bad for KJ because I like him a lot on a personal level and have always thought he could be a big star. He’s charismatic, has a very exciting fighting style and is a top level fighter. So I’m obviously disappointed that he has chosen to take this stance.

Paul “Semtex” Daley – Victory is already mine – Pro MMA Exclusive

by:  Cory Brady
Pro MMA was able to catch up with Paul Daley recently to ask him a few questions about his upcoming title fight with Jake Shields. The fight will take place on CBS, October 4th as part of EliteXC Saturday Night Fights. Daley recently made an impressive return after a brief retirement stint and is widely known as one of the sports most lethal strikers while his opponent Jake Shields is regarded as one of the best ground fighters in the game. The term has been widely overused over the years but this fight truly will be the “classic striker vs. grappler matchup”.  Confident would be an extreme understatement to describe how Daley is feeling in the days leading up to what is without question his biggest fight to date.
PRO MMA: How are you doing Paul? How are you feeling right now physically?
PAUL: I’m in great shape, I feel real strong, my conditioning and training has gone very well.
