Penn vs. Florian and Silva vs. Griffin headline UFC 101 in Philadelphia

UFC 101 will take place at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on August 8th and there will be no brotherly love loss in the main event as B.J. Penn defends his UFC Lightweight Title against Kenny Florian.

In the co-main event UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva takes a hiatus from the 185-pound division as he moves up once again to light heavyweight to take on the original Ultimate Fighter Forrest Griffin.

Dana White recently spoke about the main event match-up between Penn and Florian, “BJ Penn is called the Prodigy for a reason. He has proven to be dangerous in multiple weight classes but he is definitely at his best at 155. Now the lightweight champ defends his title against top contender Kenny Florian, who has improved by leaps and bounds since his UFC debut on the Ultimate Fighter. Originally known for his outstanding jiu-jitsu skills, Florian is now as well known for his devastating Muay Thai. Both of these guys excel standing and on the ground so I am expecting non-stop action in this world title fight.”

Ticket sales down for UFC 92

According to Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, ticket sales are down compared to the UFC’s New Year’s Eve show from 2007.

The December 27 event has sold 5,500 tickets for a $1.7 million gate. Unless there is a late surge in ticket sales, it’s expected that the final gate will be somewhere around the $2.5 million range. That number is nearly embarrassing in comparison to last year’s live gate of $4.9 million.

UFC 92 features three high profile matchups, including the second semifinal heavyweight fight in the “mini-tournament” to determine the UFC’s undisputed heavyweight champion. Last year, UFC 79 featured a co-main event featuring Chuck Liddell vs. Wanderlei Silva in a match MMA fans had been waiting to see for years, and Matt Hughes vs. Georges St.-Pierre in the 3rd match of their fight trilogy.
