Ikuhisa Minowa knocks out Sokoudjou to become Super Hulk Tournament winner

Minowaman wins the Super Hulk Tournament!

In a surprise ending to DREAM’s Super Hulk Tournament, Ikuhisa “The Punk” Minowa knocked out Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou in the third round of their New Year’s Eve bout at FieLDS Dynamite!! 2009 in Saitama, Japan.

Each fighter appeared to have won one round a piece going into the third and final round. Both fighters were very tentative in the third, and in fact were penalized with two yellow cards a piece for inactivity. However, when Minowa finally struck, he only needed one punch to land, and Sokoudjou went to the mat.

It was a short left hook that dropped Sokoudjou backward, bending his legs beneath him, and caused the referee to step in. Sokoudjou appeared to think the stoppage was early, but it was too late, the Japanese were already celebrating their hero.

Thomson Q & A with the media (audio)

Following his workout at American Kickboxing Academy, Josh Thomson fielded questions from the media. Multiple online websites were in attendance as well as several prominent bay area local television stations. “The Punk” discussed a bevy of topics that included Gil Melendez, Cung Le, Strikeforce, Scott Coker and Thomson’s displeasure with the MMA media. PRO MMA’s ( “Fast Eddie” Constantine was right next to the champ during the session.

PRO MMA’s ( Matt De La Rosa snapped dozens of photos of Josh “The Punk” Thomson’s media day workout at American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, California. “The Punk” will defend his Strikeforce Lightweight belt against “El Nino” Gil Melendez next Saturday at the HP Pavilion in down town San Jose.
