Ex-University of Tennessee linebacker to fight in state’s first-ever pro MMA event

The XTREME FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIP will be holding XFC 7: SCHOOL OF HARD KNOX this Friday, February 20 at the Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, Tennessee. One of the local stars who will appear on the card is former UT Vols linebacker and special teams ace, Ovince St. Preux. The XFC sent PRO MMA (promma.info) the following press release this morning regarding St. Preux:

Ovince St. Preux Goes from the Gridiron to the Steel Cage at XFC 7: “School of Hard Knox” on Friday, February 20 at Thompson-Boling Arena

Knoxville, TN: One of the lesser-known specialties in football is “wedge-busting” on special teams. Considered by The Sporting News the most violent position in all of football, the “wedge-buster” takes the field on punt and kickoff coverage, sprints at full speed, locates the wall of blockers trying to protect the returner, and then – boom! – sacrifices his body to take down the wall, allowing his defenders to tackle the returner. It’s arguably the most underappreciated aspect of the game, and often the cause of football’s most teeth-rattling collisions.

PRO MMA Exclusive Interview: Chad Corvin looks for another highlight KO

The fans at the St. Petersburgh Times Forum in Tampa, FL were treated to an exciting, but short main event at XFC 6 – Clash Of The Continents on December 5, 2008.

The South African Heavyweight champion, Rico Hattingh took on an undefeated prospect, Chad Corvin.  All the pre-fight hype was directed at Rico Hattingh.  After only 19 seconds of action, the only thing directed at the South African champion was medical assistance, and lots of it. He left the cage on a stretcher with his nose broken in four places. He couldn’t return to his native land for more than a month.

Chad Corvin, from Elizabethtown, KY, got his start in the sport of MMA following a street fight with an ending that neither he or his foe were satisfied with.  Shortly afterwards, he found out his foe had signed up for a local cagefighting event.  Chad followed suit.  The promotion’s matchmaker paired up the two, but his opponent never showed up for the fight.

Condit vs Kampann official for UFC Fight Night 18 main event

Recently it was rumored that WEC Welterweight Champion Carlos Condit (22-4) would make the jump to the UFC when his WEC March 1 opponent, Brock Larson pulled out due to injury and since he has eliminated all viable challengers in his WEC weight class. Now, the UFC has made this official. Condit, who recently joined Arizona Combat Sports, will fight UFC veteran Martin Kampann on UFC Fight Night 18.

The event will be broadcast live on Spike TV on April 1st from the Sommet Center in Nashville, Tennessee and will serve as a prelude to the premiere of The Ultimate Fighter: U.S.A. vs U.K.

Carlos Condit has been on a tear in the WEC. He entered the promotion on a three fight win streak and has gone 5-0 in the WEC cage. In his most recent title defense he stopped Hiromitsu Miura in the fourth round of an extremely exciting fight. Over the course of his career he has defeated six UFC veterans including Frank Trigg, John Alessio, and Renato Verissimo.

Rising prospect Shane Matchette finally finds an opponent for XFC 7: School of Hard Knox

Shane Matchette will figth Julio Gallegos at XFC 7

KNOXVILLE, TN – After breaking the bones of his last two opponents, the 26-year-old former high school wrestling standout vows to also break into the MMA championship picture.

Shane Matchette’s last five opponents mysteriously dropped out at the last minute, and the 26-year-old ex-high school wrestling phenom has a theory why.

“I’ve developed a reputation for snapping arm bones,” explained the highly-touted MMA prospect. “And once an opponent hears what happened in my last couple of fights, he always seems to come up with some excuse for dropping out at the last minute. Maybe he got injured during training camp, or maybe his grandmother is sick, or maybe his cat ran away. It’s very frustrating ‘cause I love to fight and want to stay active.”

Is undefeated 22 year-old Chad Corvin the next great American heavyweight?

Chad Corvin
Chad Corvin

Amidst great fanfare and international intrigue, South African heavyweight champion, Rico “The White Lion” Hattingh, entered the main event of the XFC “Clash of the Continents” supercard on December 5, 2008 with an 11-1 pro record, ten gold medals won from international wrestling competitions, a submission victory over UFC veteran Trevor Prangley, and universal recognition as the top heavyweight in all of Africa.

The Mixed Martial Arts media on both continents eagerly awaited Hattingh’s XFC debut against the lesser-known 22-year-old American heavyweight, Chad Corvin. Rico Hattingh left the main event on a stretcher – with his nose shattered in four different locations – after being knocked out cold in 19 seconds. But Hattingh shouldn’t feel too disheartened: None of Corvin’s previous opponents have survived the first round either.

Is the WEC preparing to add female weight classes?

It appears that WEC Welterweight Champion, Carlos Condit, could be getting a transfer to the UFC. Parent company, Zuffa, owns both promotions.

The decision to move Condit to the UFC comes on the heels of his scheduled opponent for WEC 39 set for March 1, Brock Larson, having to pull out of the fight due to injury. Condit’s first UFC appearance could be a SPIKE TV televised main event versus Martin Kampmann at UFC Fight Night 18 in Nashville, TN.

The same report indicates that the WEC will most likely go ahead and disband their entire welterweight division which would make sense if they are moving the champion to a different organization. Since Zuffa owns both promotions, UFC and WEC, it appears they are wanting to cut out all coinciding weight classes. The WEC already shut down their light heavyweight and middleweight classes and transferred most of their top fighters from those divisions to the UFC, so it appears the move with Condit fits right into the master plan.
