‘Cyborg’ vs. Akano set for Strikeforce

Cris “Cyborg” Santos finally has an opponent for Strikeforce’s ‘Shamrock vs Diaz’ card. “Cyborg” will face Hitomi “Girlfight Monster” Akano in the lone female bout on the April 11th card in San Jose, CA.

PRO MMA (promma.info) received this official press release from Strikeforce confirming the bout. The Chute Boxe product has been believed to be on a collision course with popular female fighter; Gina Carano. Santos will need to get past Akano in order to keep interest in a potential bout with Carano elevated.

Rival forces from different worlds will meet when women’s mixed martial arts (MMA) sensation, Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos (6-1) of Brazil collides with “Smack Girl” Champion Hitomi “Girlfight Monster” Akano (14-5) of Japan, in a 145-pound showdown, live on Saturday, April 11, part of Strikeforce’s Shamrock vs. Diaz stacked fight card, and airing live on SHOWTIME from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.

Strikeforce events to air live on Showtime in new deal

There is more great news for MMA fans coming out with Strikeforce’s purchase of Pro Elite assets. PRO MMA (http://promma.info) has learned that live Strikeforce mixed martial arts action will air on SHOWTIME beginning April 11, 2009.

The multi-year agreement calls for SHOWTIME to produce and televise up to 16 live events per year including the high-level Strikeforce shows fans have come to expect as well as a series dedicated to showcasing up-and-coming fighters in the sport. The Strikeforce debut event will broadcast live on SHOWTIME on Saturday, April 11, 2009 from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California. The fight card will be announced at a later date.

Deal signed: Strikeforce purchases Pro Elite

Strikeforce has officially singed a deal to purchase Elite XC’s parent company Pro Elite. Earlier this afternoon Strikeforce officials informed PRO MMA (http://promma.info) that an agreement to acquire certain fighter contracts, specific assets and the video library of Elite XC.

Strikeforce Founder and CEO had this to say about the San Jose, CA based promotion’s acquisition of Pro Elite.

“This is a tremendous development that will bolster the Strikeforce roster and allow us to produce even more competitive matchups between top fighters. Some of these athletes have been on the sidelines for a while now and are eagerly waiting to return to competition. We look forward to providing them with the opportunity to do so in the next few months.”

Nik Theotikos – 185.5 lbs. vs. Luke Rockhold – 185.5 lbs.
Rd.1 – Theotikos immedialtely pulls guard and goes for a guillotine submission and comes very close to getting it however Rockhold escapes and a couple of minutes later ends up getting a submission of his own with a rear naked choke. Luke Rockhold defeats Nik Theotikos by submission (rear naked choke) in Rd 1. All three of Rockhold’s wins have come by way of submission.

Strikeforce weigh-ins: news and notes

Promma.info’s Eddie Constantine and Matt De La Rosa were on hand at the The Hotel DeAnza to witness the Strikeforce:Destruction weigh-ins Thursday night.

The only thing colder then the San Jose weather was Joe Riggs’s attitude. Riggs’s was visibly showing the affects of a twenty plus pound weight cut and became frustrated with the athletic commission’s handling of the scale, forcing Rigg’s to strip down prior to stepping on the scale.

Another fighter noticeably shaken from cutting weight was middleweight Terry Martin. Martin was seen lying on the floor before weighing in. Immediately after he stepped off the scale Martin rushed out of the room to begin replenishing himself for tomorrow’s co-main event.

Full Time Fighter: Eric Lawson – PRO MMA Exclusive

Gladiator Challenge veteran and current Strikeforce middleweight, Eric Lawson will square off against Tony Johnson this Friday November, 21st at Strikeforce: Destruction in San Jose, California.

Eric is undefeated in Strikeforce and is steadily climbing up the ranks.

 He last fought on the Strikfeforce at the Playboy Mansion card submitting Kenneth Seegrist toward the end of round one.

After racking up three straight wins in the San Jose based promotion and winning four of his last five, Eric has started to make a name for himself.

A victory over  the young and undefeated Tony Johnson would put Eric’s Strikeforce record at 4-0 and his overall record at 8-2.
