Healy remains MFC Welterweight Champ at MFC 20: Destined for Greatness

Pat “Bam Bam” Healy and Ryan “The Real Deal” Ford took the entire five rounds to determine who would be walking out of the ring as the MFC Welterweight Champion. The rematch was a back and forth battle the entire fight with both fighters using outstanding wrestling and take downs throughout the fight. In the end, Healy edged out Ford in a split decision victory to remain the MFC Welterweight Champion inside a sold-out River Cree Resort and Casino and live on HDNet Fights.

In the Welterweight superfight, Paul “Semtex” Daley was feeling the effects of his weight cutting, as he struggled with conditioning in this fight against Nick “The Goat” Thompson. At times Daley was hesitant to stand and throw, and Thompson took advantage of his height and reach establishing a nice stiff jab early in the fight.

Once the fight hit the ground late in the 3rd round, Thompson used his superior grappling to retain control and land some shots from the top as the fight ended. The fight went to the judges, and Thompson was awarded the unanimous decision victory, and number one contender status at 170.

MFC 20: “Destined for Greatness” Preview

The Maximum Fighting Championship is back with their first show of 2009 on February 20th with MFC 20: Destined for Greatness. The event will be broadcast live on HDNet and will take place at the River Cree Resort and Casino in Edmonton Alberta, Canada.

The stacked card will showcase two title fights, with the main event being the highly anticipated rematch between Welterweight champion Pat “Bam Bam” Healy (19-13), and the wildly popular and exciting challenger, Ryan “The Real Deal” Ford (8-1).

Ryan Ford was clearly the aggressor in the first meeting against Pat Healy, who handed him his first career loss.  Healy used his counter fighting skills to finally catch and submit the young fighter in the third round, but not before he took a beating in the process. Ford has worked hard on his ground game since the first fight, looking to add to his athletic fighting style as he steps back into the ring against Healy.

For Ryan Ford it will be an even longer time coming

If Ryan Ford ever wins the MFC welterweight title it truly will have been “a long time coming.” The Canadian was scheduled to rematch champion and UFC veteran, Pat Healy last Friday night for the title but was forced out due to injury.

The fan favorite hyper-extended his knee in training and luckily did not suffer any serious damage. The two fighters have agreed to rematch on the February 20th MFC card.

The only reason there is going to be a rematch is because Pat Healy turned in perhaps one of the biggest upsets of the year. The MFC’s outspoken promoter, Mark Pavelich has been grooming Ford for some time.
