Anthony Johnson in favor of instant replay in mixed martial arts

Anthony “Rumble” Johnson, who among other things is known for one of the worst eye poke incidents in MMA history, recently spoke with PRO MMA ( about a number of topics including the recent UFC 99 fight between Mostapha Al-Turk and Mirko “CroCop” Filipovic that ended in a brutal TKO beating after Al-Turk was poked in the eye and was unable to defend himself.

Johnson compared what happened in his “UFC Fight Night 14” fight against Kevin Burns to the Al-Turk incident,

“His poke wasn’t nearly as crazy as mine. I got poked in the eye five times by somebody who said their hand was broke. He was in the middle of the exchanges where he just happened to poke the guy in the eye, and that’s just what happens sometimes. But me, I got poked five times, and there’s no excuse you know?”

CroCop signs extension, not with UFC

According to Croatian Sports website, Sportal, Mirko CroCop Filipovic has signed a 3-fight extension with FEG, the parent company of Dream and K1. In the interview, CroCop says, “The wish of the Japanese promotions is for me to fight (Alistair) Overeem in a K1 rules bout in July. I’m all for continuing our battle from last year.”

After many rumors were circulating that CroCop was close to signing with the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Japanese based FEG was quick to offer a multi-fight contract and CroCop signed. According to the report, two of the three fights will be under MMA rules and could possibly pit CroCop in a rematch against Fedor Emelianenko in December of this year.

Penn vs. Florian possible UFC 99 headliner

It has been rumored that UFC 99 in Cologne, Germany will be headlined by the ‘Prodigy’ B.J. Penn (13-5-1 MMA, 8-4-1 UFC) and the number one contender, Kenny Florian (11-3 MMA, 9-2 UFC) for the UFC’s Lightweight Championship.

The last time Penn competed at lightweight he destroyed then champion, Sean Sherk, with a TKO victory after 3 rounds. He is fresh off of his ‘Grease Gate’ loss to George St. Pierre, but Penn has not lost in the UFC at 155lbs since 2002.

Florian is on a streak of his own, winning his last six fights in a row. His last loss was a title fight over two years ago to the very strong Sean Sherk. After that fight, Florian rededicated himself and joined team Sityodtong which has done wonders for his striking.

Cro Cop confirms Hong Man Choi as opponent

For the last few weeks rumors have been circulating that Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic would be facing off against Hong Man Choi at this New Year’s Eve K-1 Dynamite card. Now Cro Cop has confirmed the MMA rules match up in his blog:

I’m excited to let you know that I have accepted DREAM’s offer to fight against Hong-man Choi on December 31 at Dynamite show. We arranged all details and the contract has been signed – the fight is officialy on.

The Croation, Filipovic, known to fans as Cro Cop, has recently been trying to put his career back together after a less than impressive stint in the UFC. He debuted February of 2007 with a great deal of fan fare, and defeated Eddie Sanchez late in the first round.
