MMA LIVE episode 42

Kenny Florian, Franklin McNeil, and Jon Anik are back with MMA LIVE episode 42 this week with ‘From U.K. to Corpus’ as they recap the action from UFC 95 in London and take a preview look at WEC 39 taking place in Corpus Christi, TX this weekend.

WEC 39: BROWN vs GARCIA takes place this Sunday, March 1 – preview

WEC Featherweight Champion Mike Brown (20-4) will make his first title defense against number one contender Leonard “Bad Boy” Garcia (12-3) this Sunday, March 1, 2009 at the Bank Atlantic Center in Corpus Christi, Texas. Brown defeated WEC ‘poster boy’ Urijah Faber (22-2) at WEC 36 in November, 2008 to win the title. It was Faber’s first loss in thirteen fights. Prior to that, Brown defeated Jeff Curran (29-10-1) and is on an eight fight win-streak.

This will be the WEC’s first foray into Texas and Leonard Garcia, who hails from Plainview, Texas, will most certainly have a large number of fans supporting him at the event. Garcia is a UFC transplant and has had two straight wins in the WEC, his most recent being a first round TKO over Jens Pulver at WEC 36 back in November 2008. Fans are not going to want to blink when Brown and Garcia match up this Sunday.

Manny Gamburyan adding more depth to WEC’s 145 divison

“The Ultimate Fighter” 5 runner up, Manny Gamburyan will be leaving the UFC, and heading to the talent rich 145 lb. division of the WEC. This isn’t the first time that talk of a move to 145 for Manny has been reported.

Following Gamburyan’s bout with Rob Emerson at UFC 87, the UFC brass suggested that Manny take the step down to featherweight and join the ranks of top contenders in the WEC. Manny stayed put at the time, but following his latest set back in his fight against Thiago Tavares, he finally made the decision to drop from the lightweight division in the UFC to the featherweight division in the WEC.

Gamburyan will go from being a small lightweight, to one of the bigger and stronger 145’ers, joining the ever expanding featherweight division in the WEC. With the emergence of Mike Brown, and with former champ Urijah Faber, Waggney Fabiano, Leonard Garcia, and an exciting young fighter like Jose Aldo; the match ups are nearly endless.

Here are some highlights of their discussion:

Urijah Faber was on a 13 fight win streak before it was snapped by now featherweight champion Mike Brown. He said it really didn’t bother him being the co-main event on the upcoming WEC card because Jamie Varner and Donald Cerrone are the championship fight and deserve to be the headliner.

John Mahlow wants to destroy Nogueira’s protégé at XFC; dreams of fight with B.J. Penn

When John “The Mulatto Mauler” Mahlow (May-Low) was asked to fight ex-UFC fighter Ryan Roberts, he immediately accepted. He did so even though he was offered the fight with just four hours advance notice and even though he had to drop nearly ten pounds to make weight.

And even though his next fight was an XFC lightweight title defense against Luis “Baboon” Palomino – a rising contender who’s trained and coached by UFC interim heavyweight champion Antonio “Minotauro” Nogueira, who considers Palomino his personal protégé and a future world champion.

Mahlow defeated Roberts, by the way: submission victory, 2:10 into the second round.
