“Strikeforce: Lawler vs. Shields” conference call highlights

On Tuesday, May 26th, Showtime in association with Strikeforce held a media conference call in anticipation of their upcoming June 6th event entitled “Strikeforce: Lawler vs. Shields” which will be held at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri and will air live on the Showtime premium cable network.

Fighters participating in the conference call were Andrei Arlovski and Brett Rogers, who will face each other and Scott Smith who will be fighting Nick Diaz on the card. Strikeforce Director of Communications Mike Afromowitz also participated in the call.

Showtime Networks Inc. and world championship mixed martial arts (MMA) event promotion Strikeforce hosted a press conference Tuesday to discuss their highly anticipated June 6 “Lawler vs. Shields” fight card live on SHOWTIME (10 p.m. ET/PT) from Scottrade Center.

Highlights from the press conference at Scottrade included an announcement by world-famous emcee Jimmy Lennon, Jr. that former UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei “The Pitbull” Arlovski (15-6) will make his Strikeforce debut and square off with undefeated prospect Brett “The Grim” Rogers (9-0) in an Affliction sponsored fight during the live televised portion of the fight card.

Knockout artist “The New York Badass” Phil Baroni (13-10) lashed out verbally about his welterweight showdown with powerhouse Joe “Diesel” Riggs (29-10) and former UFC Heavyweight Champion and two-time NCAA Division I National Wrestling Champion Kevin “The Monster” Randleman (17-12) was highly animated about returning to action for the first time in over a year to face “Iron” Mike Whitehead (23-6) in a light heavyweight matchup on the star-studded card.

Andrei Arlovski vs. Brett Rogers added to Strikeforce’s June 6 card in St. Louis

PRO MMA (promma.info) has been notified by Strikeforce that top ten ranked heavyweight and former UFC champion Andrei “The Pitbull” Arlovski (15-6) will face undefeated heavyweight prospect Brett “The Grim” Rogers (9-0) on Saturday, June 6th as part of the “Strikeforce: Lawler vs. Shields” card at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis.

Arlovski, who has a fight contract with Affliction Entertainment, wil in essence be “on loan” to Strikeforce for the June 6th fight against Rogers. Arlovski is coming off a first round knockout loss to Fedor Emelianenko back in January at “Affliction: Day of Reckoning.”

Rogers was last seen on April 11th at “Strikeforce: Shamrock vs. Diaz” where he defeated Ronald “Abongo” Humphrey via TKO early in round two. It was the first fight anyone had gotten out of the first round with Rogers.

Kevin Randleman vs. Mike Whitehead added to Strikeforce card on June 6

PRO MMA (promma.info) has been notified by Strikeforce that two-time NCAA Division I National Wrestling Champion and former UFC Heavyweight Champion Kevin “The Monster” Randleman (17-12) will make his return to the MMA cage in a light heavyweight match-up against TUF 2 veteran Mike Whitehead (23-6) during the live Showtime telecast of “Strikeforce: Lawler vs. Shields” on Saturday, June 6.

Now 37-years-old, Randleman was last seen in the ring in May 2008 when he fought and defeated Ryu Kawamura (9-4-2) by unanimous decision at “Sengoku: Second Battle” in Tokyo, Japan.  Prior to that bout he had been out of action for over two years due to a severe fungal lung infection that required surgery. 

Kevin Randleman captured back-to-back NCAA national wrestling titles in 1992 and 1993 while competing for Ohio State University. He was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 2004.

Nick Diaz vs. Scott Smith added to June 6 Strikeforce fight card in St. Louis

The San Jose-based MMA promotion, STRIKEFORCE heads east to St. Louis, Missouri on June 6 with STRIKEFORCE: LAWLER vs. SHIELDS. It will only be the promotion’s third time since their March 2006 inception to hold an event outside the state of California.

PRO MMA (promma.info) was notified by the company today that Stockton bad boy, Nick Diaz will be fighting Scott “Hands of Steel” Smith in a special 180-pound catch-weight bout on the June 6th “Lawler vs. Shields” under card. The event will air live on Showtime from the Scottrade Center.

Both Diaz and Smith, are coming off impressive victories from STRIKEFORCE’s April 11th Showtime debut. Diaz fought “The Legend” Frank Shamrock in a one-sided main event beat down that left Shamrock crumpled against the cage and unable to continue 3:57 into round number two.
