ProMMA.info Submission of 2009: Toby Imada’s Inverted Triangle Choke

When Bellator Fighting Championships released the brackets for their first lightweight tournament almost everyone looked forward to an eventual final between Eddie Alvarez and Jorge Masvidal.

One of the few people not interested in the match up was Toby Imada. In the end he actually inserted himself into that final with a brilliant submission hold also known as the ProMMA.info Submission of 2009.

On May 1, 2009, Toby Imada faced off with Jorge Masvidal for a chance to fight for the Bellator lightweight championship. Throughout the first two rounds, and most of the third, Masvidal basically landed at will. He seemingly had the answer for all of Imada’s offense.

Imada’s Inverted Triangle Choke of Jorge Masvidal at Bellator V Takes Top Honors

Las Vegas, NV – Dec. 30, 2009 –Tonight, at the Hard Rock Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas, Bellator Fighting Championships’ Toby Imada won a 2009 World Mixed Martial Arts Award for “Submission of the Year” for his astonishing inverted triangle choke submission of Jorge Masvidal at Bellator V.

Coined as the “backpack of doom” by Sherdog’s and ESPN.com’s Jake Rossen, Imada submitted striking artist Masvidal in the third round of Bellator’s season 1 lightweight tournament semi-final in Dayton, Ohio on May 1, 2009.

“Bellator XII” official results – Alvarez and Lombard crowned champions in finals

The final event of the 12-week inaugural season of the Bellator Fighting Championships took place on Friday, June 19, 2009, at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida. “Bellator XII” was headlined with the middleweight and lightweight tournament finals, with the winner of each taking home $100,000 in grand prize money.

In the middleweight finals, Hector Lombard dominated Jared Hess with solid stand up and takedown defense until finally opening a cut on Hess that ultimately led to a TKO doctor stoppage in round 4, making Lombard the new Bellator Middleweight Champion.

Bellator to crown two champions at season finale June 19

Bellator’s inaugural season comes to a close with “Bellator XII” on Friday, June 19, 2009, at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Fla., the same location the 12-week tournament started on April 3. PRO MMA (promma.info) received the full details on Wednesday.

Headlining the event will be the Bellator Lightweight and Middleweight Championship fights. The lightweight title fight features Philadelphia Fight Factory’s Eddie Alvarez taking on submission-of-the-year candidate Toby Imada,

In the Middleweight title fight, former Olympic Judoka Hector Lombard will face off against the Oklahoma All-American wrestler Jared Hess.

“Bellator V” is in the books after a stacked card entertained fans at Hara Arena in Dayton, Ohio tonight. It was the semi-final round of Bellator Fighting Championshiips’ Lightweight Tournament and Eddie Alvarez and Toby Imada both won by submission in round three, not only collecting a cool $50,000 in the process, but now they go to the finals for a chance to earn the $100,000 grand prize.

In non-tournament bouts, Nashville MMA’s resident top heavyweight prospect Dave Herman destroyed his opponent Eric Reynolds via a flying knee that put him on the canvas and finished it up with punches causing the referee to stop the action at 4:46 of round 1.

“Bellator V” weigh-in results & photos

PRO MMA (promma.info) has received the official weigh-in results for “Bellator V” which  took place today in Dayton, Ohio. The start of the semi-final tournament series begins tomorrow, May 1st at Hara Arena with the lightweights and will continue with featherweight bouts at “Bellator VI” in Corpus Christ on May 8th, and the welterweights at “Bellator VII” in Chicago on May 15th.

Fighting in the lightweight semi-finals at “Bellator V” are Eddie Alvarez (16-2) vs. Eric Reynolds (11-1) and Jorge Masvidal (17-3) vs. Toby Imada (21-11). The winner of each bout will receive $50,000 and will move on to compete in the Bellator World Championship finals in June for a shot at the $100,000 grand prize.

“Bellator V” lightweight semi-finals take place in Dayton, Ohio on May 1

Eddie Alvarez will compete in the lightweight semi-finals at Bellator V

Bellator Fighting Championships’ twelve week tournament series arrives at Hara Arena in Dayton, Ohio on Friday, May 1, 2009 for “Bellator V” and as is standard procedure for each Bellator event, will air on ESPN Deportes the following day.

“Bellator V” will feature the first round of semi-finals with a $50,000 purse for each winner and will produce two lightweights to compete in the Bellator World Championship finals in June.

Bellator’s CEO Bjorn Rebney commented on the unique opportunity these fighters have, “At Bellator, each tournament fighter has their own destiny in their hands and at the Hara Arena two fighters will get the chance to advance to the Bellator Fighting Championships finals.”

Bellator Fighting Championship invades Midwest

Hector Lombard will fight Virgil Lazano at Bellator III

As we announced previously BELLATOR II is set for Friday, April 10th, in Connecticut. PRO MMA (promma.info) learned today from Bellator officials that their third event, next week, will take place at the University of Oklahoma at Norman on April 17th. The event will be held at the home of the Oklahoma Sooners, the Lloyd Noble Center.

The Bellator Fighting Championship 2009 tournament season takes place on each Friday for twelve consecutive weeks. The April 17th show will be their third fight card and will air on ESPN Deportes on Saturday, April 18th.

Gil Melendez and Rodrigo Damm set for Strikeforce Interim Lightweight Title

PRO MMA (promma.info) has learned from Strikeforce officials that Rodrigo Damm will step in for Strikeforce Lightweight champion Josh Thomson this Saturday against Gil “El Nino” Melendez.

Damm (8-2) comes in as a late replacement for Thomson, who broke his leg during a training session Wednesday last week.

Thomson and Melendez had been set to meet in a highly anticipated rematch following their five round bout last June.”The Punk” took the title from Melendez and the two lightweight’s had been pegged to be the co-headliner for Strikeforce: Shamrock vs. Diaz.
