Santos vs. Akano raises more issues than menstruation, three-minute rounds, & weigh ins

Cagewriter’s Maggie Hendricks went on an emphatic rant about Cristiane Santos, blaming her weight-cutting trouble on that time of the month.

Jordan Breen, on Sherdog’s Beatdown after the Bell, reiterated his stance the lack of fan outrage at female fighters for not making weight devalues female competition.

During Showtime’s April 11th Strikeforce telecast, Mauro Ranallo addressed the fact women ridiculously only fight three-minute rounds.

Normally, these fine journalists would have exhausted all the high profile women’s MMA post-fight editorial topics, but not this time.

STRIKEFORCE: SHAMROCK vs. DIAZ post-fight analysis

STRIKEFORCE: SHAMROCK vs. DIAZ brought MMA back to Showtime…boy did it! The Showtime portion of the card would make any MMA promoter envious.

The night started out with big Brett Rogers taking on “Iron Ring” winner “Abongo” Humphrey. “Abongo’s” physique alone is enough to make most men tremble; that is, unless your name is Brett Rogers. Rogers cut down to make the 265-pound heavyweight limit while Humphrey weighed in at 239 pounds.

Rogers was agile and kept an impressive pace for his size; both men did, for that matter. Humphrey kept coming forward but in the end it was his downfall. Rogers’ technical superiority became evident in his crisp striking that repeatedly found its mark.

STRIKEFORCE: SHAMROCK vs. DIAZ live results

PRO MMA (promma.info) was sitting cage side at “Strikeforce: Shamrock vs. Diaz” Saturday night, April 11, in San Jose, California. From the first bout to the last, the entire card was action packed. Only one fight went the distance and it was on the under card un-televised portion. Showtime viewers got a real treat with this reintroduction to MMA.

In the end, “The Legend” seemed more like a fable as the younger, taller, longer, and larger Nick Diaz kept Shamrock at bay with jabs and combinations. Shamrock occasionally found his way through the forest of punches but it was rare and even then it was only one or two shots at a time.

Strikeforce: Shamrock vs. Diaz official weigh-in results

PRO MMA (promma.info) is at the HP Pavilion today in San Jose, California for the STRIKEFORCE: SHAMROCK vs. DIAZ weigh-ins.

Unfortunately, Christiane “Cyborg” Santos came in at a whopping six pounds over the 146 pound limit for her bout with Hitomi Akano. She has been given two hours to reach 149.5 pounds or the fight could be scrapped.

If Santos can not make the weight and the athletic commission refuses to approve the fight, it would be a huge blow to the card. Stay tuned to PRO MMA (promma.info) as this story develops.

WAMMA’s first shot at female rankings raise eyebrows

Elite XC did a lot of things wrong. The list of failures has been chronicled so many times that even interviews with wannabes like $kala seem pointless and unwanted now. However, the now deceased promotion did do one thing right. They stepped forward and promoted women’s MMA like no other show had ever done before. Of course, Gina Carano, “the face of women’s MMA,” had a lot to do with it as well.

Now, the World Alliance of MMA, or WAMMA for short, is trying to take the next step for women’s MMA and put out rankings. For their inaugural rankings, the committee listed a top ten for 145 lbs, 135 lbs, and 125 lbs, which they call featherweight, super bantamweight, and bantamweight respectively.

Gina Carano & Cris Santos tied as #1 featherweights

PRO MMA (promma.info) was notified earlier this week from the World Alliance of Mixed Martial Arts of their first-ever rankings for female mixed martial artists. As female mixed martial arts gains more notoriety and popularity, the more important the rankings become. Also, the fact that Zuffa and the UFC do not have female fighters, means the WAMMA female title-holders will have even more legitimacy than their male counterparts. Here is the official statement PRO MMA (promma.info) received this week from WAMMA:

Orlando, Florida – The World Alliance of Mixed Martial Arts (WAMMA) made history on Thursday morning when it released the first-ever major rankings poll for female mixed martial artists.
