UFC FIGHT NIGHT 17 – summary & results

After last weekend produced a card with not one submission, tonight there were a hand full of beautiful technical chokes and a great armbar by Joe Lauzon in the main event. A big weekend for converted college wrestlers

Chad Mendes
Former collegiate wrestler, Chad Mendes, will fight at Palace Fighting Championship this Friday

It won’t make me sound like an MMA swami if I say that wrestlers have been a part of MMA since the beginning. In the old days Dan Severn was suplexing people on their head and Mark Coleman was out there head butting from the top position. After that came Randy Couture who used his dominating clinch to bring the “‘Phenom”, Vitor Belfort, back down to earth.

There are currently a number of highly touted collegiate wrestlers who have transitioned into an MMA career with the UFC. On this weekend’s Fight Night 17 card, former Arizona State All-American, Cain Velasquez (4-0) will take on Denis Stojnic, while Oklahoma State’s multiple time NCAA champion, Jake Rosholt (5-0) will also see action.

Jon Fitch & Christian Wellisch cut from UFC

Former welterweight number one contender, Jon Fitch has been released from his contract with the UFC along with heavyweight Christian Wellisch.

UFC President Dana White let it be known he no longer wants to work with fighters from the American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose or those represented by DeWayne Zinkin and “Crazy” Bob Cook.

What is White upset about and why would Fitch and Wellisch be released from their contracts? According to sources, it stems from a merchandising deal and their refusual of signing over their likeness for the organization’s video game for life.

Popular Ultimate Fighter veteran, Josh Koscheck and undefeated heavyweight standout Cain Velasquez also seem to be in danger.  Fortunately for Koscheck he is headlining the UFC’s next main event on the December 10 Fight for the Troops card.  Otherwise he may have already been forced to walk the plank.
