UFC 107 pre-fight press conference notes

The “UFC 107: Penn vs. Sanchez” pre-fight press conference took place Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009, at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis, Tenn.

The press conference was in anticipation of Saturday’s UFC 107 card which will take place at the FedEX Forum in Memphis and is headlined with a UFC lightweight title fight between champion B.J. Penn and challenger Diego Sanchez.

In the co-main event, former UFC heavyweight champion and grappling specialist Frank Mir takes on devastating striker Cheick Kongo.

Kicking off the press conference was Steve Zito, Senior Vice President of Operations at the FedEX Forum in Memphis. Zito spoke about how great it was to have the UFC come to Memphis for the first time “I can not tell you how happy I am to be standing here today. Over three years ago we watched many MMA events by-pass Tennessee because it was illegal. We knew of the incredible potential of this sport in Tennessee and Memphis because of our previous successes with major boxing events.”

Watch Thursday’s UFC 107 pre-fight press conference

Watch the “UFC 107: Penn vs. Sanchez” pre-fight press conference, which took place Noon on Thursday at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis, Tenn. It is the first UFC event to ever be held in Memphis, and only the second UFC event to ever be held in the state of Tennessee.

Those participating in the pre-fight press conference include: Dana White – UFC President, Jeff Mullen -Exec Director of Tennessee Commission, BJ Penn – UFC Lightweight Champion, Diego Sanchez – UFC #1 Lightweight Contender, Frank Mir – Former Heavyweight Champion, and Cheick Kongo.

B.J. Penn and Diego Sanchez fielded questions from the media on today’s UFC 107 conference call in anticipation of their lightweight title bout taking place this weekend at the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tenn.

Sanchez earned his title shot after moving to the lightweight division at the beginning of 2009, then defeating top contenders Joe Stevenson and Clay Guida. It will be Penn’s third lightweight title defense.

BJ Penn says, “I wouldn’t mind seeing Lyoto knock Rashad Evans the F out”

Wednesday at 3pm PT / 5pm ET BJ Penn was a guest on a new BJPenn.com radio show that will be airing weekly on his website. It was the first interview the UFC Lightweight Champion has given since losing a Welterweight Title Fight to Georges St. Pierre at UFC 94.

Although BJPenn.com does host the radio show they did not take it easy on the Hawaiian with the questions. BJ seemed honest in his assessment of what happened during the fight and admitted he got his “ass kicked.” He also revealed that he has not seen the fight yet and could not really remember anything past the second round and may have suffered a concussion.
