Russia Legion and USA East join USA West and Team England in M-1 Challenge semi-finals

Hilversum, Holland — With the completion of its eighth and final regular season event of the 2009 “M-1 Challenge Presented by Affliction,” the final playoff field of four has been set. Both Russia Legion and USA East qualified for the playoffs on Sunday night at Studio 22 in Hilversum and will be heading to the M-1 Challenge semifinals on Sept. 26 in Russia.

Russia Legion won Group D following its 5-0 sweep of Team Turkey. Led by welterweight Magomed Shihshabekov, voted the eighth best European MMA prospect by Sherdog.com, Legion won all of its matchups inside the distance. With the flawless victory, Legion finishes the 2009 regular season with a perfect 3-0 team record and an individual record of 13-2.

UFC, WEC, and EliteXC veterans Clark, Doyle, and Brenneman added to USA East roster for Aug. 15-16 M-1 Challenge

With welterweight Steve Carl still sidelined by leg surgery and lightweight Renato Migliaccio now on the shelf due to shoulder surgery, USA East has been forced to make multiple roster changes in anticipation of its Sunday, Aug. 16 M-1 Challenge matchup vs. Team Benelux.

The best-of-five series, scheduled to emanate from Studio 22 in Hilversum, Holland and will be televised live via Internet PPV on www.M-1Global.com (not available in the U.S. or Korea), is set to serve as the feature attraction of a two-day “mega-taping” of the M-1 Challenge scheduled from Aug. 15-16. All told, the weekend will feature 10 teams from the M-1 Challenge for a total of 30 fights.

Affliction’s M1 Global Challenge season opener – results & summary

PRO MMA (promma.info) was live at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, Washington on February 21st for the 2009 “M-1 Challenge Presented by Affliction” season opener. There were a total of 30 fighters, 15 fights, and six teams which included Team Benelux vs. Team Finland, Team South Korea vs. Team Imperial Russia, and Team USA West vs. Team Brazil. It was a great start for the new season and the following is a summary of the night’s events.

The first matchups were Team Finland vs Team Benelux (Belgium, Netherlands, Luxemborg). The first bout, the lightweights, started off like gangbusters. Both guys were throwing and landing blows from their feet in an almost carefree manner, it was a great fight to start off the night and the already intoxicated crowd loved it! The decision could have went either way after two rounds, but the Benelux fighter, Danny Van Bergen got the nod from the judges with a unanimous decision.

Rosters and lineups for 2009 M-1 Challenge opener on Feb. 21 in Seattle released

'Day of Reckoning' standout, Bobby Green, will appear at the M-1 opener on Feb. 21

M-1 Global officials have finalized rosters and matchups for the 2009 “M-1 Challenge Presented by Affliction” season opener set to take place on February 21 in Seattle, Washington at the Emerald Queen Casino.

Matchups for the stacked 15-bout opener include the return of the Imperial Team (formerly known as “Russia Red Devil”), the 2008 M-1 Challenge champions, who will begin the defense of their crown in a best-of-five matchup against Team South Korea.

The opener will also feature the debut of Team USA West, managed by M-1 Vice President of Legal Affairs Steve Bash and renowned California-based promoter Roy Engelbrecht. Bash and Engelbrecht have secured an impressive roster for their debut effort with Affliction veteran Bobby Green, The Ultimate Fighter season seven qualifier Reggie Orr, IFL veteran Raphael Davis, and EliteXC veteran Carl Seumanutafa all committed for the season opener.
