UFC 90: Silva vs. Cote – Kinohi’s picks

by:  Kinohi Abaro

Anderson “Spider” Silva (22-4) vs Patrick “Predator” Cote (13-4)
After beginning his career in the UFC 0-4, Cote has rebounded with 4 straight victories to earn his shot at MW King and consensus P4P #1, Anderson Silva. Underdog Patrick “Predator” Cote will look to test his granite chin against the sledge-hammer like fist, knees, and shins of the “Spider” Anderson Silva. Many fans and experts believe Cote doesn’t deserve a title shot, nor does he stand a chance. Anderson Silva does not share the same sentiment as fans, the humble Brazilian respects Patrick Cote and the skill set that he brings to the table and will not make the mistake of looking past his opponent.

Anderson Silva will retire in 2009

by: Jack Bratcher

We’ve heard all the rumors and the so-called “mistranslations” but it doesn’t seem to get any more clear than this new interview with Anderson Silva where he says he will retire once his current contract with the UFC is up.  He has six fights on his contract until June of 2009.  Silva says, “everything has it’s time and I believe my time is already over.”

When asked if it had anything to do with the salary he makes from the UFC he assures us it has nothing to do with that and that he has never fought for the money.  The reporter tells Silva that he is sad to hear this and Silva tells him not to be sad because he will be sitting at the side of the Octagon with a fat belly eating popcorn cheering on the fighters.

Sanchez out – Koscheck vs. Alves at UFC 90

by:  Jack Bratcher

The last time we saw Diego Sanchez in the cage was back in June when he faced Luigi Fioravanti at the TUF 7 Finale. We saw in that fight continued proof that the “old” Diego was back. Sanchez fans became somewhat concerned after his lackluster performance against Josh Koscheck at UFC 69 and then again when he lost to Jon Fitch at UFC 76. Up until those fights, the pride of Albuquerque had not known defeat in his professional MMA career.

Both of Diego’s losses came in 2007; his only two fights that year. Maybe it had something to do with how the planets were aligned because as soon as 2008 rolled around we saw Diego’s impressive first round victory over UFC newcomer, David Bielkheden and then another win three months later with his TKO over Fioravanti. By all appearances the Zen master had returned.

Cote makes good assessment of Anderson Silva

Patrick Cote is the next person in line (many would call it a firing line) to fight Anderson “The Spider” Silva in the UFC middleweight division. Cote will be trying to take away Silva’s title in the Windy City on Oct. 25th.

Cote starts out this interview by saying, “I’ve never been rocked, I’ve never been knocked out in my life.” Yeah, well Kimbo Slice never had a black eye prior to Oct. 4th either. When it comes to facing the UFC Middleweight Champ, what you have or have not done in your past really makes not a difference in the world. It doesn’t matter if you’ve spent your whole life as a lion-tamer when you come face to face with a venomous King Cobra. It’s a completely different animal.

Having said that, Cote does seem to have a pretty accurate assessment of Silva’s skill level. He says, “His biggest strengths are everything. He’s the best fighter in the world.” Cote asks for the ultimate test when he declares, “I want to fight the best Anderson Silva possible.”  If nothing else, one must admire Cote for his ambition as he readies himself for the biggest fight of his life.

Anderson Silva Retiring And It’s Affect On The UFC

by:  Kelvin Hunt

Supposedly, UFC Middleweight Champion, Anderson Silva has told Brazilian cable channel SporTV, that he has “already gave his all and within one year will put aside his gloves.” If this quote is true, which so far has not been denied, it would be a sad day for many Spider Silva fans all around the world. He has cleared out the UFC middleweight division and tested the waters of the light heavyweight division with a first round KO of James Irvin.  However, there are at least five big fights I would love to see before Anderson Silva retires:

  • Anderson Silva vs. Chuck Liddell-Although Liddell is coming off a devastating KO loss to Rashad Evans…he is still a HUGE name in MMA.  That’s proven by over 4,000 people coming out in the Phillipines to see him work out as the UFC did some promotional touring in that country.
  • Anderson Silva vs. Forrest Griffin-Griffen is arguably the best known fighter coming from the TUF show and is the current LHW champion.
  • Anderson Silva vs. “Rampage” Jackson-Jackson is the former LHW champion and a fan favorite
  • Anderson Silva vs. Randy Couture-I realize that Couture is currently fighting at HW, but he is the former LHW champion as well.  In fact, if he can’t get the Fedor fight done….why not fight the guy that’s right there with Fedor as the best P4P fighter in the world?
  • Anderson Silva vs. Cung Le-This fight would have to take place in California since that’s where the majority of Le’s fanbase resides.
