CBS Saturday Night Fights Conference Call

EliteXC had a media conference call today featuring Gina Carano, Kelly Kobald, Jake Shields, and Paul Daley, all who will be fighting Oct. 4 on CBS Saturday Night Fights.  The four fighters fielded questions from various reporters. Here’s a synopsis:

Gina  Carano & Kelly Kobald
Carano, when asked if she felt any frustration for not being able to fight Chris Cyborg, responded, that there’s no frustration for not fighting Cyborg this time. Although she does want to fight her, she wants to get through this fight first and then see what happens with Cyborg. Gina insisted, “I’m gonna be here for a second.”

Jared Shaw thinks the media is making too big of a deal out of Gina Carano “refuting her position” as the face of women’s mma.

One subject Gina Carano did not care to spend much time discussing was her weight. When asked what she weighs now and how much she will weigh at weigh-ins next Friday, she responded, “I will weigh 140 lbs. next Friday and what I weigh now I will keep to myself.”

Murilo “Ninja” Rua is on a quest. He’s on a quest to capture gold in EliteXC’s middleweight division. The same gold that slipped through his fingers not that long ago at the hands of current champion, “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler. Ninja can move one huge step closer to that gold by getting past an explosive former IFL superstar that goes by the name of Benji Radach. While there is a ton of hype surrounding the Kimbo/Shamrock battle, many mma insiders feel like the Ninja/Radach bout will be the fight of the night. Murilo has been exciting fans all over the world since his early fighting days in his native country of Brazil to his Pride days in Japan and now right here in the United States. October 4th on CBS EliteXC Saturday Night Fights is sure to be no exception as Ninja will wage war with knockout artist Benji Radach in a bout where the winner will move one step closer to a shot at the title.

Vitale Fight “Just Another Day” For Trigg

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Off the heels of his latest conquest in Japan, mixed martial arts (MMA) superstar Frank Trigg (17-6) doesn’t seem too concerned about his next challenge, submission expert, Falaniko “Niko” Vitale (26-8). In fact, Trigg’s seemingly nonchalant attitude toward the 185-pound limit matchup with Hawaii’s top talent could be mistaken for brash overconfidence.

“To me, it’s just another day for me,” said Trigg, a 2000 Olympic wrestling trials finalist and former UFC welterweight championship challenger who will battle Vitale in a featured Strikeforce “Payback” MMA contest at Broomfield, Colorado’s Broomfield Event Center on Friday, October 3rd. “All of my days start to run together so I don’t have any thoughts about a particular fighter.”

When the subject of conversation turns to the state of his career, though, Trigg’s tone suddenly becomes more focused and intense. “I’ve only got a couple fights left so every fight is important to me.”

TUF 8 – Team Nogueira vs. Team Mir Episode 2 Recap

By Denny “The Mad One” Hodge

The show wastes no time getting to action with Wesley Murch from the UK matching up against John Polakowski in a Lightweight fight. Murch quotes Churchill in his pre fight interview, while Polakowski comments on his ADHD, but nothing controversial like week 1 and Aquilar‘s comments.

Round 1- The fight begins with Murch looking for a takedown, and Polakowski sprawling. The fighters are quickly back on their feet and clinching against the fence. Polakowski goes for a trip but ends up on his back with Murch looking to drop some bombs from the top. Polakowski looking to create some space to get back to his feet, but Murch maintains top position. Murch goes for a leg, and works on a heel hook with Mir shouting instructions from outside the octagon. Polakowski ends up on top, and looks to pass the guard and ends up in side control. Polakowski backs off to get the fight back standing, and Murch nearly gets clipped with a big right, prompting him to look for a takedown. The fighters are back on their feet in the clinch again along the cage. Polakowski takes a step back, and as Murch ducks in for a takedown he gets caught with a knee.

Andrei Arlovski vs. Roy Nelson added to CBS card on Oct. 4

Great news for MMA fans!  If everything goes as planned, former UFC Heavyweight Champion, Andrei “The Pitbull” Arlovski will be fighting Roy “Big Country” Nelson on Elite XC’s CBS “Saturday Night Fights” which takes place Oct. 4 at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla. and will be headlined by Ken Shamrock fighting Kimbo Slice.  Word has it the contracts are penned but not yet signed. Cross your fingers.

This really helps the card a lot.  In fact, it will be interesting to see which fights don’t make it onto the CBS portion of the card because there are some great match-ups going on. We could potentially see the top five fights being on CBS. That would be nice, right?

There are some names on the undercard you might not be familiar with because they have added some local Florida talent to the card and at least a couple of these guys will make their pro mma debut with Elite XC. Pretty cool for them.

Here is a look at the whole thing:

Post-UFC 87 Roger Huerta is no “slippery moron”

Roger Huerta was recently in Toronto and spoke with MMA Canada.

Roger said that dealing with his first professional loss against Kenny Florian at UFC 87 was very hard.  It was tough but he has taken some time off and has been able get some rest, spend some time with friends and family and refocus on his goals.

Roger responded to some comments Kenny made after their fight when Kenny apparently said that Roger felt “a little slippery” during their bout.  Roger said he considers that “a low blow…and instead of saying this cat is tough, he’s a wizard on the ground and I can’t finish him…it is harsh.”  Roger went on to say, “If Kenny was not satisfied with his win” then they could do it again in a rematch.

The subject of Huerta’s relationship with the UFC and some comments he had made came up and Roger had this to say, “The thing I want to take back is this; I didn’t realize how much the world title meant to me until the loss….and it means a lot in the UFC because honestly, the UFC does have the best fighters in the world.”  He goes on to try and clarify what he meant by his controversial statements in the magazine, “All I was trying to say is that it’s not wrong to look at it as a business…if I had a position for Wells Fargo Bank and U.S. Bank offered me more money and it would help myself and my family and retirement, then there’s nothing wrong with that.  That is something to logically think about…that was it…nothing more.”
