UFC and Fabricio Werdum part ways

by: Matt De La Rosa

Don’t expect Fabricio Werdum to become a heavyweight gatekeeper or stepping stone in the UFC. MMAWeekly has reported Werdum’s contract negotiations with the UFC have ceased.

After a knockout loss to Junior Dos Santos at UFC 90, any leverage Werdum had going into negotiations ended the minute he hit the canvas in Chicago.

With rising stars such as Cain Velasquez and Shane Carwin, Werdum’s 2-2 record in the Octagon made him an expendable commodity in the UFC’s eyes.

Had Werdum defeated the UFC newcomer Dos Santos two weeks ago, many believed he would get the first crack at the winner of the four man tournament between Couture / Lesnar and Nogueira / Mir for the heavyweight title.

Chael Sonnen to receive WEC Middleweight Belt

by:  Jack Bratcher

Following Paulo Filho’s inability to make weight topped with his losing performance at WEC 36, fans said the Brazilian champ should relinquish his title.

Apparently in agreement, the Filho camp plans to do just that. Filho’s manager, Ed Soares, said he planned to ship the WEC Middleweight Title belt to Chael Sonnen as soon as possible according to a new blog from Josh Gross.

Even though the bout between Filho and Sonnen was a non-title bout due to Filho’s fault of missing weight, the Filho camp agreed to give the belt to Sonnen in he were to win.

Filho moving to L.A. – Wants rematch then a move to LHW

by:  Jack Bratcher

Former WEC Middleweight Champion, Paulo Filho, was clearly not himself on Oct. 5 at WEC 36 when he gave up a unanimous decision to Chael Sonnen and lost his title.

It was Filho’s first professional loss in seventeen fights since turning pro in 2000. It was a highly uncharacteristic performance that left everyone scratching their heads in confusion.

The good news is Paulo Filho is taking the loss exactly the way you would expect a champion to take it. Filho told Tatame on Thursday, ““What can I do, it’s sad… The fact is that I have no excuses, he (Sonnen) went there and did his job to neutralize me and that’s what happened, he did the right job and he has all merits… It was good to give me a new spirit.”

The Ultimate Fighter 8 – Episode 8 Re-Cap

By Denny “The Mad One” Hodge

We are starting to get down to business now with the numbers being narrowed down, and the semi’s starting to shape up.  This episode is supposed to showcase a lightweight that is being compared to GSP.  It looks like we may be in for a treat with some good action in the LW match up tonight.

After the quick re-cap from the LHW match up last week, we shift to the house for team Nogueira enjoying Tom Lawlor’s fruit tray…again.  It seems they do this almost every day to Tom, and he is not exactly happy about it.

Pro MMA Radio interview with Brock Lesnar

We are now less than two weeks away from what is being billed as “the biggest fight in UFC history.”  That is an enormous title to live up to; but for different reasons, if there are two MMA fighters who can live up to the challenge it is these two Octagon warriors.  On the one hand we have Randy “the Natural” Couture; the wise and weathered veteran who has seen it all, been through it all, and sits upon the throne as King of the UFC.

But a famed warrior reminiscent of Conan has burst through the castle doors and challenged the ruler to a duel in front of the whole kingdom.  This warrior is bigger, faster, stronger and in many ways the antithesis of our battle-hardened king.  It will be a fight for the ages, for all the glory and all the treasure the Master of the Octagon deserves.

Chris Leben disappoints

by: Jack Bratcher

Those who watched UFC 89 were bound to notice the improved physique of one Chris Leben. His main event bout against Michael Bisping was an inspiring performance where he looked calm and relaxed and constantly pushed the pace throwing the bombs he’s known for. However, Bisping out-pointed the Hawaiian transplant with a defensive, elusive and tactical gameplan.

Much ado was made recently about Leben maturing as a fighter and as a person. Gone are the days of the self-destructive alcoholic punker spritzing on the pillows of his fellow TUF cast members. “Maturity” was the new catch word for Leben. Apparently, he’s moved on and picked up some new more “adult” vices.
