Dana White headed to Montreal to try and save UFC 97

PRO MMA (promma.info) has learned that the Quebec Athletic Commission has a meeting planned next week with Dana White, in which the UFC President wiill try and save UFC 97. Sources close to the situation indicate both parties would like to try and resolve the issue with an open mind.

We reported to you on Thursday that the athletic commission had intentions to cancel UFC 97 if the UFC did not adapt its regulations to those of Quebec. According to the current rules of the Quebec Athletic Commission a fighter can not strike their opponent with knees or elbows.

UFC 97 in danger of not happening

UFC 97, featuring a main event Middleweight Title fight between Anderson Silva (23-4, UFC 8-0) and Thales Leites (14-1, UFC 5-1), is set to take place April 17 in Montreal, Canada. Although tickets for UFC 97 went on sale Wednesday and 12,000 are already sold, the event is now in danger of not happening due to a conflict with the rules.

Do you remember UFC 83: Serra vs. St. Pierre 2? If you do, you are doing better than the Quebec Athletic Commission. They have apparently forgot that in the UFC fighters are allowed to strike with knees and elbows because they are now saying those things are not allowed according to the rules of their athletic commission.

UFC 95: SANCHEZ vs STEVENSON conference call (transcript)

Joe Stevenson and Diego Sanchez recently joined members of the media for a UFC 95 conference call. Joe Stevenson will fight Diego Sanchez in a main event lightweight match-up on Saturday, Feb. 21 in London England. The event will air in the U.S. free on SPIKE TV. Here is a transcript of that call:

We were – we have Joe Stevenson on the line here for you, one of the headliners for the UFC 95 event and we were hoping to have Diego Sanchez on this call as well. BJ Penn says, “I wouldn’t mind seeing Lyoto knock Rashad Evans the F out”

Wednesday at 3pm PT / 5pm ET BJ Penn was a guest on a new BJPenn.com radio show that will be airing weekly on his website. It was the first interview the UFC Lightweight Champion has given since losing a Welterweight Title Fight to Georges St. Pierre at UFC 94.

Although BJPenn.com does host the radio show they did not take it easy on the Hawaiian with the questions. BJ seemed honest in his assessment of what happened during the fight and admitted he got his “ass kicked.” He also revealed that he has not seen the fight yet and could not really remember anything past the second round and may have suffered a concussion.
