Historic MMA Rivalries, part 4: UFC vs. Fighters

Throughout history management and labor have always butted heads. When it comes to the UFC and their fighters, they too hold a history of disagreements.

While no UFC contract dispute may come close to having an impact on society like the Homestead Strike, the contract fighters are asked to sign with ZUFFA, LLC are constantly making the news. “Zuffa” is an Italian word meaning “brawl”, however some of the UFC’s biggest and nastiest brawls have actually been outside the Octagon over their now somewhat infamous contracts.

Randy Couture and Jon Fitch’s quarrels with Dana White and the UFC became front page news this year. Tito Ortiz and Dana’s public war of words appeared in MMA discussion forums as much as UFC commentator, Mike Goldberg uses his “Pedro Rizzo 85 mph baseball bat” reference.

Chael Sonnen on Pro MMA Radio

Chael Sonnen returned to Pro MMA Radio for PMR 25 and continued the conversation with host, Larry Pepe that started during his last visit on November 18th.

To start off the interview they discussed the first Filho fight. Sonnen revealed the fact that after looking over his career losses before his first bout with Filho, he noticed an alarming and quite possibly a career destroying trend. Prior to the second Filho fight, all of Sonnen’s losses except the Jeremy Horn fight, came after he was dominantly controlling the fight.

He attributed those losses to a mental block that forced him to basically give up and put himself into a losing position or submission to get out of the fight. After seeing the sports psychologist and going as far as using hypnosis, he feels he has fixed the problem.

Lashley wins MMA debut, “The Snowman” defeats Rodriguez

Bobby Lashley won his MMA debut Saturday night in Miami, Florida at Mixed Fighting Alliance: There Will Be Blood. The former WWE superstar stopped his opponent, debuting fighter Joshua Franklin, in forty one seconds due to a cut on the forehead above his right eye.

Despite making his debut with Mixed Fighting Alliance (MFA), Lashley remains under contract with the American Fight League. The heavyweight received permission from the AFL in order to make his pro debut.

The AFL had attempted to loan out their fighters to other promotions in joint ventures prior to Lashley fighting on the MFA card. The reason for these rentals come from the AFL’s decision to hold off putting on a card until next Spring.
