Dana White post-UFC 88 interview

Many people were left feeling bewildered after UFC 88.  How could The Iceman, the most popular mma athlete in the world and a knockout artist in his own right, get laid out cold by a TUF winner?  How was this possible?  People began to act and speak as if it “shouldn’t” have happened.

Immediately after UFC 88 and following the KO heard around the world in Atlanta, Dana White spoke with ESPN radio where he addressed some of these concerns and a lot more. Here is what the good friend of Chuck Liddell and UFC President, Dana White had to say :

  • In reference to the main event, White states “Chuck Liddell has never been knocked out like that, ever.”
  • He goes on to say that Rashad Evans felt Chuck “was at the end of his career” and was very excited about his match up with the Iceman.
  • White talks about a “changing of the guard” and how The Ultimate Fighter is “the real deal” for bringing in new talent.
  • Now we have TUF 1 winner vs. TUF 2 winner for the LHW title.
  • White says the LHW title fight would have been Rampage vs. Forrest in a rematch but his legal issues screwed the timing up. [Rampage instead will fight Shogun.]
  • Dana discusses his questionable eating habits that were displayed during his video blogs.

Remembering Evan Tanner – Tribute Video

Here are a few quotes taken from the hundreds and hundreds of friends and fans who have posted at evantanner.net. The world and the sport is a lesser place now that he is gone but is definitely a better place because he lived:

“Evan was his own man. He knew his path, and he walked it, as he will continue to walk in our hearts.”
“Those of us lucky enough to know our quiet thinking fighter will carry him in our hearts forever.”
“I will always be a fan of yours. You lived life to the fullest and I appreciate everything you did for the sport of MMA.”
“Believe in the power of One, right Evan? You are my hero. Thanks for everything you did to make me believe again.”
“You are an icon for the sport and will live in our hearts forever as a legend.”
“This is what Evan Tanner was – a warrior for the sake of being a warrior.”
“He was the frist fighter that I saw and he is the way I love MMA. My hubby Chris and I have a son who will be 4 years old on the 13 on this month and his name is Evan Tanner Appleby! You will be missed and loved!”

Evan Tanner – Rest in Peace

Evan Tanner , former UFC middleweight champion, is no longer with us.  He was found deceased Monday, September 8th near Palo Verde, California.

Tanner wrote often in his blogs on Myspace.com and Spike.com about taking trips into the wild to get his head straight and as he would put it, “cleanse himself”.  He had expressed interest in taking another trip recently. Here is a portion of Tanner’s blog on Spike.com from August 16th, 2008.

“I’ve been gathering my gear for this adventure for over a month, not a long time by most standards, but far too long for my impatient nature. Being a minimalist by nature, wanting to carry only the essentials, and being extremely particular, it has been a little difficult to find just the right equipment. I plan on going so deep into the desert, that any failure of my equipment, could cost me my life. I’ve been doing a great deal of research and study. I want to know all I can about where I’m going, and I want to make sure I have the best equipment.

Redbelt Review – Mamet’s take on the start of the UFC and the Gracie Family

By: Fast Eddie

I am back! I suffered 3 herniated discs during my last lesson in humility with Luke Stewart. The things I sacrifice for the readers of PROMMA. Due to that sacrifice, I have been unable to write, work, walk, or anything else that starts with a W. Alas, after physical therapy and a lot of pain medication, I have returned to health and to PROMMA. Now on to the subject at hand.

David Mamet’s latest work, Redbelt was recently released on DVD, and gives us a look into the life of Brazilian jiu-jitsu instructor Mike Terry. The focus of this movie is the struggle that Terry faces between his belief structure as to what a fighter and martial artist should represent and providing for his family at the expense of those beliefs. To Mamet’s credit, he has studied BJJ for roughly 5 years under the tutelage of Renato Magno is Los Angeles. Magno is the first black belt under the legendary Rigan Machado. On top of that, Mamet is a well-respected writer in Hollywood circles and is known for his use of symbolism. It is this aspect of the film that I found very interesting.

Quinton Jackson finds a home

by:  Jack Bratcher

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson has joined fellow fighters Michael Bisping and Paul Kelly at the Wolfslair fight team according to Fighters Only. Gym owners, Anthony McGann and Lee Gwynne confirmed he has signed a three-year deal with the British team.

McGann aknowledges that Jackson’s former coach, Juanito Ibarra did resign but that they parted on good terms.

It seems Jackson and Bisping have formed a close relationship so that combined with the fact they are called “Wolfslair,” made it an easy choice for the Memphis native known for his wolf-like howls.  He even spoke of it being “destiny.”

It seems when Jackson fights in the U.S. his camp will be split between Big Bear, where they will bring the Wolfslair to him, and England, which is the homebase of the team.  And when he fights in England, his full camp will be there.  His day-to-day training will continue at the Huntington Beach Ultimate Training Center.

Why Tito Ortiz Should Move To The Heavyweight Division

by:  Kelvin Hunt

If the reports are true, then Tito Ortiz is back on the market as a free agent.  A few weeks ago Ortiz told Sports Illustrated that he had signed a ground breaking deal with Affliction.  However, that story turned out to be false with new reports that Tito Ortiz is again negotiating with the UFC.  If Ortiz does in fact sign with the UFC, recent bouts have proven that he is not a top tier LHW anymore.  The only marketable matches left for him in the division is a rematch with Wanderlei Silva, and a rematch with current champ Forrest Griffin.  Ortiz isn’t even close to earning a title shot, so a match with Wanderlei Silva is the only big money fight for him there.

Ortiz has always been a huge LHW fighter standing around 6’2″ and walking around at over 220lbs.  In fact, he has commented that he would move to the HW division if the money was right.  The UFC HW divison is relatively thin, and adding a name like Ortiz to the mix would give it a much needed boost.  The relatively weak division would also give Ortiz the fast track to a title shot.  Here’s a list of possible matchups:
