A big weekend for converted college wrestlers

Chad Mendes
Former collegiate wrestler, Chad Mendes, will fight at Palace Fighting Championship this Friday

It won’t make me sound like an MMA swami if I say that wrestlers have been a part of MMA since the beginning. In the old days Dan Severn was suplexing people on their head and Mark Coleman was out there head butting from the top position. After that came Randy Couture who used his dominating clinch to bring the “‘Phenom”, Vitor Belfort, back down to earth.

There are currently a number of highly touted collegiate wrestlers who have transitioned into an MMA career with the UFC. On this weekend’s Fight Night 17 card, former Arizona State All-American, Cain Velasquez (4-0) will take on Denis Stojnic, while Oklahoma State’s multiple time NCAA champion, Jake Rosholt (5-0) will also see action.

Condit vs Kampann official for UFC Fight Night 18 main event

Recently it was rumored that WEC Welterweight Champion Carlos Condit (22-4) would make the jump to the UFC when his WEC March 1 opponent, Brock Larson pulled out due to injury and since he has eliminated all viable challengers in his WEC weight class. Now, the UFC has made this official. Condit, who recently joined Arizona Combat Sports, will fight UFC veteran Martin Kampann on UFC Fight Night 18.

The event will be broadcast live on Spike TV on April 1st from the Sommet Center in Nashville, Tennessee and will serve as a prelude to the premiere of The Ultimate Fighter: U.S.A. vs U.K.

Carlos Condit has been on a tear in the WEC. He entered the promotion on a three fight win streak and has gone 5-0 in the WEC cage. In his most recent title defense he stopped Hiromitsu Miura in the fourth round of an extremely exciting fight. Over the course of his career he has defeated six UFC veterans including Frank Trigg, John Alessio, and Renato Verissimo.

Will B.J. Penn quit the UFC?

Prior to the UFC 94 Welterweight Title fight, B.J. Penn had quite a few harsh words to say about his opponent, Georges St. Pierre. Among other things, B.J. called him “a quitter” and “a frontrunner.”

Following their main event fight on January 31st that was stopped after round four by B.J.’s corner, UFC Welterweight Champion, Georges St. Pierre spoke to MMA Live about the irony of the situation.  St. Pierre stated, “It’s called reflexology. He was saying things about me but he was really talking about himself. Those things he said about me are really characteristics that he sees inside himself.”

Host Kenny Florian said, “He called you a quitter, but he was the one who quit tonight.” Frank Mir who was also on the MMA Live panel said, “He was projecting onto you those things.”
