The WEC has a new featherweight champion

Jose Aldo defeated Mike Brown at WEC 44 to become the new WEC Featherweight Champion.

Jose Aldo (16-1) took Mike Thomas Brown’s (22-5) WEC Featherweight Title Wednesday night, Nov. 18, at WEC 44, at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas, Nev. Brown seemed one step behind Aldo through the entire first round as Aldo landed more strikes and Brown could not get him to the ground. Round two started the same way, but Aldo quickly poured on the heat, got his own takedown, and pounded out the win at 1:20 of the second round.

It was Nov. 2008 at WEC 36 when Mike Thomas Brown first knocked out Urijah Faber in the first round to become the WEC Featherweight Champion. For his first title defense, he submitted Leonard Garcia via first round arm triangle at WEC 39. They gave Faber one more chance at WEC 41, but Brown once again proved his dominance by taking home the five round unanimous decision.

Pulver vs Faber 2 Slated for WEC 38

by: Matt De La Rosa

Instead of getting an immediate rematch with Mike Thomas Brown, Urijah Faber reportedly will face off against Jens Pulver one more time.

The two featherweights squared off back in June at WEC 34 with “The California Kid” defeating Pulver via unanimous decision after five hard fought rounds.

The number one featherweight contender spot gets awarded to Leonard Garcia (12-3) who will receive the first crack at Mike Thomas Brown’s 145 pound title. Garcia stopped Pulver at 1:12 in the first at WEC 36, the same event where Brown took Faber’s title.

WEC 36 – a word from the editor

by:  Jack Bratcher

I always enjoy the WEC events.  They run a tight ship over there with no frills; just good solid MMA action from some of the top talent in the world.

However, last night was strange.  Why in the world they chose not to air the Rob McCullough vs. Donald Cerrone fight had me flabbergasted.   Even on the edited replay of the event they didn’t air it.

Of course it turned out to be the fight of the night.

Paulo Filho should be stripped of his belt.  His division, middleweight, has been folded into the UFC anyway but just to make a statement they should have stripped him for not making weight.
