hendricks vs thompsonStephen “Wonderboy” Thompson will try to break into title contention with a win over former welterweight champion Johny Hendricks in the UFC Fight Night 82 main event tonight from Las Vegas. The event will broadcast live on Fox Sports 1, with early prelims streaming live on UFC Fight Pass.

Heavyweights Roy Nelson and Jared Rosholt clash in the co-headliner, and Ovince Saint Preux takes on former Strikeforce light heavyweight champ Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante.

UFC Fight Night 82 round-by-round updates:

Artem Lobov vs. Alex White

Round 1 – White landing some nice knees to the body in the center of the octagon. Lobov with a right hand and body kick. Lobov ties White up against the cage after eating a couple punches. A right hand from White staggers Lobov and White takes him down. Lobov gets to his feet but pays for it by absorbing a few shots. 10-9 White

Round 2 – White circling on the outside and is getting the better of the standup. Nice straight left from White. Lobov cut below his left eye and bleeding. Left hook from Lobov blocked. Lobov bleeding pretty good now and White takes him down. 10-9 White

Round 3 – Lobov can’t get his timing down. Missing the majority of his shots at this point. White’s landed about double what Lobov has throughout the fight. Another takedown from White after setting it up with some boxing. Lobov gets to one knee, he’s breathing very hard as White keeps him pinned to the cage and scoops him back down. Lobov back up and they square up. Lobov trying to walk him down now, knows he needs the KO. Lands a wide winging left hook, then a right as White tries to avoid the assault during the last minute. White is landing nice counters now. Lobov with hands down. White jabbing him. White ducks under punches for a takedown to end the round. 10-9 White. That was a really fun fight. Great performance from White and great heart from Lobov who really tried to get the finish and nearly did with a couple of those wild punches.

Mickey Gall vs. Mike Jackson

Round 1 – Winner of this fight gets CM Punk in his UFC debut. Jackson gets dropped with a right hand right away. Jackson taps to a rear-naked choke and that’s it. Punk is cageside, stands and claps wearing a smile.

Noad Lahat vs. Diego Rivas

Round 1 – Lahat takes an eye poke that halts the action early. Back at it and Lahat gets a takedown. Sets up a guillotine but eventually Lahat lets it go. Rivas looks for a triangle, Lahat picks him up and shakes him off. Lahat takes Rivas’ back but a scramble sets up a head and arm choke from Lahat. He lets it go but has full mount now. Rivas eventually gets to his feet and goes for a slam but gets caught in a guillotine and Lahat uses it for a reversal and is now on top. 10-9 Lahat

Round 2 – Diego Rivas remains unbeaten after landing a perfectly timed flying knee that knocked Lahat out cold. Rivas baited him in for the takedown attempt and timed the knee perfectly to put him out. One hitta quitta. Great comeback for Rivas after getting dominated in round one.

Ray Borg vs. Justin Scoggins

Round 1 – Scoggins stuffs a takedown. Now controlling Borg against the cage for a length of time. Borg breaks free but still can’t get the takedown. Scoggins backs out with a left, but takes a right from Borg as they clinch back up. Scoggins backs out with a high kick. Nice front kick. Straight left hand backs Borg up. Switch high kick scores. Scoggins stuffs another takedown. Hard low kick from Scoggins. His style is confusing Borg it seems. His striking is looking really good, his footwork and arsenal is very impressive. More body kicks from Scoggins before the bell. 10-9 Scoggins

Round 2 – Borg pulls guard. Body shots from Scoggins as he passes to side mount and they’re back up. Scoggins just picking him apart on the feet now basically. Beautiful hook kick. Scoggins’ movement is just so excellent. Takedown from Scoggins. North-South position. Borg hits a switch but Scoggins reverses immediately. Back up and Scoggins tees off on the body, Borg counters with a right hook upstairs. 59-13 for Scoggins on strikes landed. Scoggins taunting a bit with hands down, Borg bleeding from his nose. Body kick from Borg. Step in knee from Scoggins. Straight left. Borg times a spinning backfist as he ducks under for a takedown attempt but Scoggins is able to defend and push him to the cage. 10-9 Scoggins

Round 3 – Borg shoots early and ends up on top. Scoggins gets up, Borg jumps on for a guillotine but gets slammed off. Scoggins now on top inside guard. Elbows from half guard. Borg finally makes his way up but is quickly put back down. Borg tries to get something going off his back and finally gets to his feet. He tries jumping on a guillotine choke one more time but slides off and is now on his back with Scoggins in his guard again. Scoggins stays busy. 10-9 Scoggins

Damian Grabowski vs. Derrick Lewis

Round 1 – Takedown from Grabowski but Lewis gets a reversal quickly and is now on top dropping some ground and pound. He stands over Grabowski and dives in with a big right. Lewis repeats the technique and Grabowski is cut and bleeding from the top of his head. Lewis continues the punishment and dives in with one more big right and the ref stops it.

Josh Burkman vs. KJ Noons

Round 1 – This should be fun. Burkman’s lightweight debut. Hard to recall a boring Noons fight. Low kick from Burkman. Burkman moving well, being cautious, selective. Crowd not liking it though, getting a bit restless. But Burkman fires off a body and low kick, another low kick, checked though. Noons can’t get in range for his punches. Spin kick from Burkman. Noons is not know for his kicks and he can’t get inside at this juncture. Body kick from Burkman. Burkman looks more at home in there to me right now. Noons has not landed a strike yet according to the announcers. He gets off a few shots before the bell. 10-9 Burkman

Round 2 – They’re talking at each other. Burkman shoots against the cage, picks Noons up over his head for a huge slam, he lands on his ass and is right back up. Impressive slam though maybe not worth the effort except psychological. But Burkman is looking super fluid tonight. He eats an overhand left from Noons. Then a right hook inside. Left hook from Josh. He circles outside. Noons cuts him off and lands a right hook. Burkman with a punch combo and leg kick. Then a clinch knee to the body from Burkman. High kick from KJ followed by a spinning backfist. 10-9 Burkman

Round 3 – Noons takes the center quickly. Josh takes him down right away though. Noons back up and he knows he needs to finish it seems. He’s putting on the pressure. Noons tags him with some punches and Burkman starts looking for the takedown, nice exchange and a knee from Burkman. Big right from Noons. Nice knee from KJ. Body shot from Noons. Burkman looking for the takedown again with 2 minutes to go. Jab and body kick from Burkman. He shoots in again. I just realized Burkman has a tramp stamp. Elbows to the side of the head from KJ. KJ’s nose is busted up pretty good and bleeding. Big slam from Burkman. Imposing his will like a prime Randy Couture. Bald head and all. Dominant performance from Burkman 10-9.

Mike Pyle vs. Sean Spencer

Round 1 – Body kick from Spencer. Jab from Spencer snaps Pyle’s head back. Low kick from Pyle. Overhand right from Pyle. Left hook from Spencer. Jab. Low kick from Pyle, right hook. They trade jabs. Overhand right from Spencer drops Pyle. He gets on top of him inside full guard as Pyle tries to control him. Spencer gets up and lets him up wanting none of that ground game. Lead left hooks from Spencer. Another. Spencer continues to press. Pyle lands about three short overhand right hooks before the bell. 10-9 Spencer

Round 2 – Low kick from Pyle and a couple jabs. He’s looking pretty good and hurts Spencer with a right hand. He continues the assault as Spencer is wobbled.  A spinning backfist from Pyle but then Spencer recovers and hurts Pyle. Now two left hooks from Spencer, overhand right. Right check hooks from Pyle. Lands a well-timed knee. Counter left hook from Pyle. Lead left hook from Pyle. Right hook from Pyle as Spencer backs him to the cage. Takedown from Pyle as he drives him across the cage. Fun fight! 10-9 Pyle

Round 3 – Pyle showing good defense to start the round. Couple left hooks and a right from Spencer. Spencer triples up on the punches. Clinch knee and trip takedown from Pyle who looks to set up a guillotine, uses it to sweep. Pyle did that per instruction of his corner. Now Pyle has him against the cage and is looking for the guillotine. Spencer defends and gets to his feet, eats a knee. Spencer fires back with a couple punches. They square back up in the center. 90 seconds to go. Spencer eats a knee that hurts him, but then Pyle lands a spinning elbow and backs him to the cage with a calculated beatdown of Thai limbs that causes the ref to stop it and a bit too late as Spencer took an enormous amount of punishment though he refused to go down. Pyle could be seen talking to Lorenzo Fertitta through the cage afterward; it looked like he told him he was getting a bonus.

Misha Cirkunov vs. Alex Nicholson

Round 1 – Left from Misha. Body kick from Misha, then a low kick. Superman punch and low kick from Alex. Body kick from Misha. Left hook from Cirkunov, then shoots in but Alex avoids the takedown. Misha hurts him with a couple knees and punches and he’s bleeding now. Overhand left from Misha, then a takedown. Nicholson gets to his feet eating several punches along the way. Alex is warned about a low blow and time is called. Right hook from Misha, then lands a few more against the cage as Nicholson misses with a spinning backfist. Takedown from Misha. He controls Nicholson til the bell. 10-9 Cirkunov

Round 2 – Takedown from Cirkunov. Looking for the rear naked choke as he takes Nicholson’s back, who is turtled up. Cirkunov softens him up with punches then locks on a neck crank and let me tell you it is a nasty one and this guy is strong. He cranks that thing and it looks like it broke Nicholson’s jaw who has had his jaw broken before. It was nasty guys and he taps. Cirkunov confirms afterward he heard the jaw crack.

Joseph Benavidez vs. Zach Makovsky

Round 1 – Left hand and a low kick from Joe. He’s the aggressor at the moment. Makovsky feeling him out. Left from Joe. Inside low kick from Zach and then a takedown but Joe is up quick. Hard low kick from Joe. Short right elbow from Joe in the clinch. Right hook. Goes for a head kick but doesn’t land clean. Hard right to the body from Joe, body kick. Nice right to the body/right to the head combo from Joe. Zach looking for the takedown and gets the slam. Goes for Joe’s back. 10-9 Benavidez

Round 2 – Front kick from Joe to the body. Inside low kick from Makovsky. Nice combo from Joe. Counter left from Zach. Another takedown from Zach but Joe bounces right up only to be taken down again but he’s right back up. Left counter from Joe. Body kick from Makovsky. Takedown from Zach but Joe is up. Zach catches a knee and dumps Benavidez, takes his back as Joe gets up but can’t hold it. 10-9 Makovsky

Round 3 – Benavidez throws Makovsky off from a takedown attempt. Benavidez landing some right hands now. He lands a knee in the clinch. Couple elbows from Joe. Joe lands a hard step in right hand that stuns Makovsky. Joe lands another one and this forces a shot from Makovsky but it’s stuffed. Left counter from Joe. Joe blocks a high kick, the tie up briefly. Joe lands a right behind the head that knocks Zach down, he goes to try and finish but the bell ends the fight. 10-9 Benavidez

Ovince Saint Preux vs. Rafael Cavalcante

Round 1 – Feijao circling the outside, lands a low kick on the foot. Hard body kick from OSP blocked on the arms. OSP looking for that chin with the left. Takes a counter right hook. Right hook from OSP. Low kick from OSP and it looks like he hurt his foot on that one, may be broken. Feijao sees it and attacks the leg. Feijao lands on it again inside this time. OSP kicks with it. It’s his right lead leg affected. He checks the next leg kick. OSP really at only about 80% right now at most because of that. He hurts Feijao with a left and goes for the finish as he goes down. OSP now inside full guard with 30 seconds left. OSP can KO you from here though. He tries to get off some shots but Feijao ties him up pretty good. 10-9 OSP

Round 2 – No mention of the foot in the corner though they put ice on both feet. Body kick from OSP. He’s looking mostly recovered now. Left leg lead now. Switches to right leg forward. Looks like he’s trying to set up a high kick maybe. High kick but it’s partially blocked. Feijao with a left hand. Double jab from OSP, front kick to the body. Another. Feijao goes down during an exchange, mostly tripped. OSP inside his guard now. Feijao has him tied up, looks to be trying to isolate an arm but OSP is landing some hard shots. 10-9 OSP

Round 3 – High kick from Feijao. OSP shoots, stuffed. OSP whiffs on a right then ducks one of Feijao’s . He connects with his next punches though then scoops Feijao for the takedown. OSP on top in half guard. … The crowd begins to boo after not much action from top. Ref warns them but no stand up. OSP stands up with 30 seconds left and dives in with a big left. Feijao ties him up briefly but OSP pours it on hard and the bell saves Feijao. 10-9 OSP

Roy Nelson vs. Jared Rosholt

Round 1 – Roy pressing with a low stance, feinting an uppercut, obviously anticipating the shot. Jab from Roy. Just misses with the uppercut. Roy looking for the homerun. Uppercut from Roy. Rosholt touches Roy up with a few punches after Roy misses. Couple of lead lefts from Jared. Inside leg kick from Jared. This isn’t the handsomest UFC fight of all time. 10-9 Roy

Round 2 – Jared shoots, stuffed. Roy unable to capitalize. Jab from Rosholt. Roy pressing, jab lands. Big leg kick from Roy slows Jared down. Jab from jared. Roy slips but Jared couldn’t capitalize. Body kick from Jared. He’s trying his best to avoid a firefight with Roy and the crowd doesn’t like it. Roy continues the pursuit, but is having trouble cutting him off. Right lands behind the head for Roy, then a left. Lead left hook from Roy and Jared doesn’t like it. 10-9 Nelson

Round 3 – Hard low kick from Roy. Roy threatens a takedown but is pushed off. Nice jab from Roy. Man Roy swinging big and Rosholt somehow just ducks and runs out of the way. Roy counters a missed high kick with a couple big rights. Low kick from Roy and he may have hurt his foot on that one. Roy defends a deep takedown attempt from the wrestler. Roy lands one last winging right hook before the bell. 10-9 Nelson

Johny Hendricks vs. Stephen Thompson

Round 1 – They touch gloves twice; once before and once after Big John’s little speech. And they touch one more time. Friendly fight. Wonderboy switching stances, throws but misses a leaping head kick. Johny closes the distance with a right which sets up a takedown attempt. Wonderboy breaks out to the center. Looking loose. Setting him up. Side kick to the body, to the head. High kick, then a nice punch combo from Wonderboy, teeing off now. Johny comes in and gets tagged again, still pressing, eats a right. High kick blocked. Eats a straight left off a low kick. Johny trying to stand with this guy and is getting lit up. He’s tough though and trying to walk him down, cautiously now. Thompson attacks with a two punch combo and a kick. A right hand hurts him and Thompson smells blood. A spinning back kick knocks Johny against the cage and he finishes him off with a left hand that puts him down and several rights for the icing. Wonderboy is a title contender my peeps. Great fight and about as I thought it would go to be honest despite Thompson being the underdog.
