Pro wrestling legend “Rowdy” Roddy Piper (real name Roderick Toombs) has died after suffering a heart attack at his home in Hollywood, Calif. Thursday night.
TMZ was the first to report the news on Friday.
“Roddy Piper was one of the most entertaining, controversial and bombastic performers ever in WWE, beloved by millions of fans around the world,” said WWE Chairman & CEO Vince McMahon. “I extend my deepest condolences to his family.”
Piper joined the WWE in 1984 and was part of the first Wrestlemania, teaming up with Paul Orndorff to take on Hulk Hogan and Mr. T in the main event. Piper was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005. He is survived by his wife Kitty and their four children.
Coincidentally “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey, who got her nickname because she was such a fan of Piper (and received his blessing), fights this weekend in Brazil. Maybe she will dedicate the fight to him. Also, Roddy has a son who is an MMA fighter (or was), Colt Toombs. You can view his record here.
