Well that free-agency didn’t last long. Bellator announced earlier today that they had granted Eddie Alvarez, their lightweight champion, an unconditional release with no matching rights. Now it has been confirmed Alvarez has signed on with the UFC and will face Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in the UFC 178 co-main event, scheduled for Sept. 27th in Las Vegas.

Alvarez (25-3) is riding a three-fight win streak, most recently winning the Bellator 155-pound title for a second time with a split decision win over Michael Chandler last November. He has finished 14 of his 25 wins via knockout, seven via submission, with only four of his wins coming by way of decision.

Cerrone was originally scheduled to face Bobby Green, however, Green will now be moved to a later card. UFC 178 is headlined with a flyweight championship bout between Demetrious Johnson and Chris Cariaso.
