As number six and seven ranked UFC lightweights Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and Jim Miller get ready to do battle Wednesday night at UFC Fight Night 45 in Atlantic City — Cowboy’s third fight of 2014 by the way — Stockton brawler Nate Diaz sent out a little tweet on Tuesday in honor of his former opponent…

I think he meant to say “wear” cowboy hats. Anyway, we get the point.

And so does UFC President Dana White, who took up for Cerrone, who would probably fight every week if he was healthy and the UFC would let him.

Dana White’s words via UFC.com:

“Nate can do whatever he wants to do. Nate can sit out and not suck any UFC whatever, for as long as he wants to. Who cares, he’s a grown man. Sit out for as long as you want, sit out the rest of your career, it’s your decision. But to start making fun of guys who actually like to fight, and guys who go out there and put on unbelievable fights and people love to see him? (Cowboy) steps up and does what he does. People love Cowboy Cerrone. Nate wants to talk about making money, but there’s only one way to make money, and that’s fighting.”

Cerrone is indeed making money. He’s finished his last three opponents and won performance bonuses for each one. He’s fought eight times since his loss to Nate Diaz in 2011, and he’s won six of them. Diaz has fought four times, and won two, most recently knocking out Gray Maynard back in November.

Loyal friend to the 209, Layzie The Savage (@layziethesavage), had an interesting take on the subject (via Instagram):

Before you start talking about the main event of #UFCFightNight… Remember… @NateDiaz209 whooped them both. #paytheman #natediaz

He’s got a point, Diaz did whoop em both. And with the UFC in desperate need of stars these days, they might just wanna “pay the man”. Something tells me Dana and Co. aren’t going to cave to Nate’s hard-nosed tactics though. What do you think?

  1. Nate did whip them both….and then promptly lost his next two fights before winning his last one..he also signed a contract that he should honor!
