bobby lashley tna champBobby Lashley won the TNA World Heavyweight Championship for the first time Thursday night by pinning reigning champion “Showtime” Eric Young live on Spike TV’s Impact Wrestling. Lashley, a former WWE U.S. Champion, first signed with TNA in 2009 and after a three-year hiatus returned to the promotion at the “Lockdown” Pay-Per-View event earlier this year.

Lashley is a decorated amateur wrestler as well and is one of the few athletes to simultaneously compete in professional wrestling and professional mixed martial arts. The 37-year-old Strikeforce veteran has put together a respectable 10-2 record in MMA, and is currently riding a three-fight winning streak, lastly defeating Tony Melton for the Xtreme Fight Night (XFN) Heavyweight Championship in November.

On a side note: With Scott Coker taking over as head of Bellator, and with him having an established relationship with Lashley during his Strikeforce days, is it possible we could see Lashley inside the Bellator cage? After all, TNA and Bellator are both part of the Spike TV family — and we’ve seen King Mo and Rampage make appearances in the TNA ring. Just a thought.
