The decision isn’t official but UFC President Dana White has said that the much anticipated matchup between Chris Weidman and Vitor Belfort is likely to take place on Memorial Day weekend. The date is May 24, and would be the second title defense for Weidman since dethroning Anderson Silva at UFC 162, and beating him again last month at UFC 168.

The UFC historically has had big fights on Memorial Day weekends in the past. The UFC heavyweight title was on the line on Memorial Day weekend 2013 as Cain Velasquez destroyed Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva for the second time. In 2012, the UFC card held on Memorial Day weekend featured the first ALL heavyweight main card  and was headlined by another heavyweight title fight in Junior dos Santos and Frank Mir.

The unannounced event would likely be named UFC 173.

Belfort has been on a tear as of late, winning his last three fights via KO, winning “Fight of the Night” honors in all three fights. He became the first fighter ever to finish Dan Henderson via TKO in his last outing in November 2013.
