Nick Diaz ‘retiring’ and Dana White coaxing him back into the fold has become par for the course, so, in the interest of illustrating just how out of hand this has gotten, I will be removing all proper nouns from the following account:

A welterweight fighter who is 0-2 in his last two fights, and has not won a match in two years, largely due to a one year suspension for a failed drug test, will be returning from his third retirement to go up in weight and face the former light heavyweight champion, whose only loss since surrendering his belt has been to the consensus number two contender in his division.

Sounds ridiculous, right? well, not if said unnamed welterweight is Nick Diaz. At a Q&A session this week UFC president Dana White not only reopened the door for Diaz’ return to the Octagon, but sweetened the deal by entertaining the possibility of a middleweight bout against Lyoto Machida. “I talked to Diaz today, and I made him an offer […] He had been talking about going to 185 pounds; Machida has been talking about going to 185 pounds, so we wanted to see if he wanted to fight Machida”, said White.

Whether or not Diaz or Machida will agree to the match has yet to be seen, but, if the deal is finalized, fans could potentially see this go down as early as November’s UFC 167, at which Machida was initially expected to fight Vitor Belfort.

Hey, at least it’s not JonesSonnen II.
