nelson-kongo ufc 159

The overhand right. Everybody knows that Roy Nelson possesses one of the best right hands in MMA and it usually only takes one to end a fight in his favor. Cheick Kongo found that out firsthand as he became the latest victim of “Big Country’s” right hand, as Nelson put the fight away with his favorite weapon at 2:03 of the opening round.

Roy Nelson took the center of the cage to start and wasted little time clinching up with Kongo on the cage. Kongo fought off the takedown attempt as the referee called for action, while firing off his trademark knees inside. After a stall, the referee restarted the action. That’s when the big bang happened.

Nelson walked forward and countered a kick from Kongo with his powerful right hand and when it connected, Kongo went down. Nelson added two more right hands for good measure, leaving Kongo unconscious on the mat and the crowd on their feet.

The impressive first-round stoppage improves Roy Nelson to 19-7 overall (6-3 UFC), while moving him one step closer to title contention in the UFC’s heavyweight division.
