UFC 156 LIVE results and play-by-play

ufc156-live resultsUFC 156 takes place this evening at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas and features a Featherweight Championship main event between reigning title-holder Jose Aldo and former lightweight champ Frankie Edgar in his 145 pound debut. In the co-main event Rashad Evans faces Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in a light heavyweight match-up.

Alistair Overeem takes on Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva in heavyweight action. Jon Fitch takes on Demian Maia at welterweight. Round 1 – 135 pounds. Jab from Kimura. Camus lands a big punch that knocks Kimura off balance. Camus clinches up and Kimura jumps guard. Kimura throws up his legs looking for a triangle  or possibly armbar. Kimura locks on an omoplata uses it for a sweep. Now on his feet overlooking Camus. Kimura dives in with a right. Camus gives up his back and Kimura hops on him, but ends up on bottom with full guard. Kimura instantly working for something with his very active guard. Kimura throws up an armbar, Camus escapes and lands a punch before the bell. PMN sees it 10-9 for Camus.

Round 2 – Touch gloves. Huge leg kick from Camus. Camus with a leg kick, front kick. Lots of switching stances. Leg kick. Right hand from Camus. He circles the outside, leg kick. One two from Kimura, lands another right. Camus with a body lock. Presses Kimura to the cage. Knee to the head. Body shots from Kimura. Big knee from Camus, again to the body. Kimura turns him around and Camus escapes to the center, shoots for a double and puts Kimura on his back. Kimura looks for a sweep, goes for an armbar. Camus hops over to escape. Kimura locks up a triangle, turns it to armbar and time is up. Wow! PMN has it 10-9 for Camus.

Round 3 – Touch gloves. Right hand Camus. Leg kick. Camus shoots for a single. Kimura defends, clinched against the cage. Camus backs out to the center, one two punch, shoots for a single, but ends up on the bottom, mounted, gives up his back. Kimura with both hooks in, locks on the choke and Camus taps quickly. Impressive ground game by Mr. Kimura. He improves to 11-0.

Round 1 – Green stalking. Front kick. Leg kick. Volkmann tries to clinch, shoot, no dice. body kick Green. Volkmann gets him down. Volkmann in half guard, landing some left hands. Green tries to explode free, no dice. Green explodes. Volkmann stacks him with a punch. Green kicks him back and tries to get up, but Volkmann jumps on his back, gets a figure four leg lock and looking for the choke with under a minute to go. Time. PMN has it 10-9 Volkmann.

Round 2 – No glove touch. Leg kick Green, again and Volkmann shoots, sprawl from Green. Volkmann shoots again, Green pushes him to the cage, knees from the clinch, he backs out. Volkmann shoots, stuffed, ends up on his back with Green inside full guard. Nice ground and pound from Green with body shots and elbows. Green moves to half guard, lands a couple elbows and body shots. More elbows. Ref stands them up and the whole place roars with boos. It was a bad standup for sure, he was landing some nice shots, the best e’s done so far. Green fires off a couple nice shots. Volkmann gets a body lock and drags Green down with a minute to go. Both hooks in and Volkmann looking for the choke. Green survives. PMN has it 10-9 Green.

Round 3 – Leg kick Green. Vokmann shoots, sprawl from Volkmann and Green lands a knee. Left hook from Green and Volkmann kicks him in the groin. Brief time out. Volkmann looks tentative. Big body kick from Green. Volkmann shoots, stuffed, knee to the body from Green and he takes Volkmann down, takes side control. North south, now half guard and Green lands some shots. Volkmann gets to his feet. Looks very tired. Body punch Green. Volkmann shoots, stuffed, knee from Green. They scramble to the ground, Green gets full mount and is landing big shots. Volkmann holds on for dear life with one minute left. Volkmann’s face is busted up badly. Volkmann gives up his back and Green chokes him out. Volkmann taps. Huge win for Green in his UFC debut.

Round 1 – This should be a fun fight. Touch gloves. Big overhand right from Woodley knocks Hieron down. Woodley attacks him with vicious abandon and knocks him unconscious. Hieron tries to cover up as he goes to his knees. Hieron rolls to his back but then gets pounded with three big punches and he goes out. Great UFC debut for Mr. Woodley! Who said this guy wasn’t exciting?

Big left and a right from Joe wobble Ian. Low kick catches Ian in the groin, brief time called. Leg kick Ian. Right from Joe staggers Ian. Left from Ian. Joe stalking. Body kick from Joe. Ian smiles at him tells him to come on. Leg kick from Joe, again. Leg kick Ian. Head kick Joe. Joe throwing bombs. Big body kick from McCall. Body kick from Joe, then a right counter. Round 1 – Jon Fitch’s hair is out of control. Maia shoots and gets Fitch down right away, takes his back, both hooks in as Fitch stands. Maia with a body triangle while standing. Maia looking for the choke and Fitch is in trouble early in this fight. Maia softening him up with punches to the side of the face. Maia puts his feet on the ground, Maia trips him and still has a body lock. Maia gets him back down, Maia putting knees to his ribs. Gets the body triangle with a little over a minute to go. Fitch turtles up with Maia still on him. Body shots from Maia. Stupid crowd booing. PMN has it 10-9 Maia.

Round 2 – Leg kick Fitch. Left hand Maia. Right hand Fitch. Maia with the single leg and gets Fitch down easily. Wow. Fitch kicks him back and gets to his feet. Left hand Maia. Body lock takedown, takes Fitch’s back and already has one hook in. I’m really surprised at Maia out-wrestling Fitch like this. Both hooks in now for Maia, body triangle. Maia goes palm to palm. Fitch defending with blind punches and wrist control but it’s a constant battle and he’s losing this fight badly. And once again the stupid crowd is booing. I hate these people. PMN sees it 10-9 for Maia. Fitch’s coach says forget all technique and throw the sink at him, you need a knockout.

Round 3 – Touch gloves. Fitch with a kick and Maia gets under it and is all over him with a body lock, presses him to the cage as Fitch avoids the takedown for now.  Maia is on his back once again with both hooks in. The crowd is booing and I want to  yell at them. Fitch makes it to his feet. Maia shoots. Fitch stuffs it, gets a guillotine and forces Maia down, lands a big elbow. Fitch can’t hold top control and Maia gets up and has a body lock. Fitch gets free and gets some distance. Maia shoots and gets Fitch down again. Just incredible. Fitch very frustrated and is complaining. Rogan calls him hypocritical. Round ends with Maia in full mount. PMN has it 10-9 and 30-27 for Maia. Incredible performance.

Round 1 – Return of the REEM. Guaranteed a title shot with a win here. No glove touch. Leaping left hand from Overeem. Clinch from Reem, pushes Silva to cage. Knee, they break. Jab, clinch from Reem. Reem backs out. Right hand and a knee from Reem, another knee. Another. Body shots from Silva, knee from Reem, he backs out. Silva looking to counter. Reem dodges a kick and punch. Silva shoots, stuffed. Reem pushes him to cage, gives him some knees. Ref wants action. Reem backs out. Front kick from Silva and he eats an overhand right from Reem. Left hook. Leg kick. Leg kick Silva. Reem pushes him to cage. One minute to go. Reem leaning on him, backs out. Reem with his hands down. Jab, right counter as he dodges Silva’s right. Clinch, pushes him to the cage. Round 2 – Leg kick Silva. Jab Reem. Leg kick Silva is checked. Right hand from Reem, then a body lock takedown, lands in side control. Nice elbows from Bigfoot from his back. Big right from Reem. Body body head from inside full guard now. These are hard shots. Reem stands and lays back in guard. Big right from Reem. Body body head, Reem moves to half guard. Ref wants action. Reem stands up, ref lets Silva up. Jab from Reem, Thai plum and a big knee to the face from Silva. Looks to have been mostly blocked. Reem fires with a punch and an elbow before the bell and they mean mug each other at the bell. 10-9 for Reem.

Round 3 – Silva’s corner told him Reem was very tired. Reem stands in front of him and gets tagged with a couple punches then a head kick stuns Reem. Silva follows up with several big bombs, Reem is hurt, he goes down and out. My god! Silva knocks Alistair Overeem unconscious. And for some reason they rule it TKO. Reem underestimated him.
