glover_teixeira-153UFC light heavyweight Glover Teixeira scored the biggest win of his career on Saturday night when he bested former UFC light heavyweight champion Rampage Jackson to win a unanimous decision.

The win pushed Teixeira to (3-0) in the UFC and seemingly into the contender discussion by the amount of questions he received from media at the UFC on FOX 6 post-fight press conference. Teixeira seems to have a growing contingent of chatter online that believe he’s the next big thing in the UFC light heavyweight division.

It is of no fault of Teixeira who admittedly dismissed talk of him getting a title shot after the win over Jackson, and believes he needs at least one more win before that should happen.

He’s right. He probably needs two wins.

If you take Jackson out of the equation, Teixeira’s opponents have a combined UFC record of (5-7). Admittedly, Fabio Maldonado has been robbed in two of his ‘losses’ but he still is not an upper tier light heavyweight. Also, beating Jackson nowadays isn’t the same as beating Jackson even two years ago.

Have fighter’s received undeserved title shots in the UFC? Absolutely, and it’ll probably happen again if there’s big money to be made or if another untimely injury comes into play. However, when it comes to Teixeira there’s still a lot of work to be done to get in the discussion. Yes, he beat Rampage Jackson fairly convincingly, but so did Ryan Bader in Jackson’s last fight. In fact, Bader is who I would like to see Teixeira fight in his next fight. They both just fought on the same card and Teixeira is going to have to beat someone like Bader to prove if he’s for real or not.

Let’s say he takes out Bader hypothetically. Would beating Bader earn him a title shot at that point when there are fighters like Alexander Gustafsson and Lyoto Machida in front of him?

It shouldn’t.

So let’s calm down with all the Teixeira should get a title shot talk. He has won three in a row, but he still has a lot of work to do to prove he’s a legit contender or threat to become champion in the UFC light heavyweight division
