UFC heavyweight Matt Mitrione

UFC officials announced that TUF alum Matt Mitrione (5-1) will replace the injured Shane Carwin and fight Roy Nelson (17-7) at the TUF 16 Finale in December.

We reported that Carwin had blew his knee out and had to withdraw from the scheduled bout between opposing coaches on this season of “The Ultimate Fighter”.

Mitrione was slated to fight in December at UFC 155 against Phil De Fries, but another opponent will be inserted into slot with Mitrione moving to the TUF 16 Finale card.

Mitrione hasn’t fought since suffering his first career defeat at the hands of Cheick Kongo at UFC 137. The former football player has won four of his five wins via TKO/KO.

Nelson is coming off a quick KO win over Dave Herman at UFC 146. Nelson had lost a unanimous decision against Fabricio Werdum at UFC 143 coming into the fight with Herman.

The TUF 16 Finale will take place on December 16th in Las Vegas, Nevada, at The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. The main card will air on FX, and preliminary fights will air on FUEL TV and Facebook.
