MMA Rankings (8/14/2012)

A lot can change in a few weeks in the world of MMA. We just saw Ben Henderson retain his UFC lightweight title against Frankie Edgar at UFC 150. Also, Lyoto Machida and Shogun Rua were victorious the prior weekend and it seemed like a great time to update the ProMMANow.com World Rankings. Find out where everyone stands and let the controversy begin.

Heavyweight

  1. Junior dos Santos (UFC Champion)
  2. Cain Velasquez (UFC)
  3. Alistair Overeem (UFC)
  4. Fabricio Werdum (UFC)
  5. Daniel Cormier (Strikeforce)
  6. Frank Mir (UFC)
  7. Josh Barnett (Strikeforce)
  8. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (UFC)
  9. Antonio Silva (UFC)
  10. Travis Browne (UFC)

-None of the top heavyweights have fought since the last time we updated our rankings. However, we know that Daniel Cormier will face Frank Mir next. Also, JDS will fight Cain Velasquez in December in a rematch from last November. Travis Browne and Antonio Silva will do battle in a few weeks.

Light heavyweight

  1. Jon Jones (UFC Champion)
  2. Dan Henderson (UFC)
  3. Rashad Evans (UFC)
  4. Lyoto Machida (UFC)
  5. Mauricio Rua  (UFC)
  6. Phil Davis (UFC)
  7. Alexander Gustaffson (UFC)
  8. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (UFC)
  9. Ryan Bader (UFC)
  10. Quinton “Rampage” Jackson (UFC)

-I moved Lyoto Machida ahead of Mauricio “Shogun” Rua due to his performance over a more highly ranked opponent in Ryan Bader at the UFC on FOX 4 event. Machida destroyed Bader while Rua had an extremely tough fight against an unheralded Brandon Vera. Of course, Jon Jones will try to defend his title against Dan Henderson at UFC 151 in September. I didn’t drop Ryan Bader from the rankings because he was fairly competitive against a top five guy in Machida. He also holds a recent win over Rampage Jackson.

Middleweight

  1. Anderson Silva (UFC Champion)
  2. Chael Sonnen (UFC)
  3. Chris Weidman (UFC)
  4. Michael Bisping (UFC)
  5. Mark Munoz (UFC)
  6. Vitor Belfort (UFC)
  7. Tim Boetsch (UFC)
  8. Yushin Okami (UFC)
  9. Brian Stann (UFC)
  10. Luke Rockhold (Strikeforce)

-No movement here as Okami is the only guy that has fought since we last updated. He won against unranked Buddy Roberts at UFC 150, but struggled early on before taking Rogers out in the second round. Michael Bisping and Brian Stann will fight at UFC 152.

Welterweight

  1. Georges St. Pierre (UFC Champion)
  2. Carlos Condit (UFC Interim Champion)
  3. Nick Diaz (UFC)
  4. Johny Hendricks(UFC)
  5. Martin Kampmann (UFC)
  6. Jon Fitch (UFC)
  7. Josh Koscheck (UFC)
  8. Rory MacDonald (UFC)
  9. Jake Ellenberger (UFC)
  10. BJ Penn (UFC)

-No movement here.

Lightweight

  1. Ben Henderson (UFC Champion)
  2. Frankie Edgar
  3. Gray Maynard (UFC)

  6. Gilbert Melendez (Strikeforce Champion)
  7. Clay Guida (UFC)
  8. Anthony Pettis (UFC)
  9. Michael Chandler (Bellator Champion)
  10. Donald Cerrone (UFC)

-No movement here. Cerrone took Melvin Guillard out in impressive fashion, but was on the brink of being finished early on so I can’t move him ahead of anyone here.

Featherweight

  1. Jose Aldo (UFC Champion)
  2. Pat Curran (Bellator Champion)
  3. Chad Mendes (UFC)
  4. Ricardo Lamas (UFC)
  5. Hatsu Hioki (UFC)
  6. Marlon Sandro (Bellator)
  7. Diego Nunes (UFC)
  8. Erik Koch (UFC)
  9. Chang  Jung Sung (UFC)
  10. Dustin Poirier (UFC)
