Frankie Edgar(left) will rematch Ben Henderson in the summer 2012

Ask and you shall receive? That must be the case as UFC President Dana White informed fans earlier today via his Twitter account that former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar will receive a rematch against the current UFC lightweight champion Ben Henderson this summer. A specific date was not given.

Ben Henderson defeated Frankie Edgar at UFC 144 via unanimous decision in a highly competitive bout which took place last month in Saitama, Japan.

White initially indicated that Anthony Pettis would potentially receive the next title shot, but Edgar voiced that he would like an immediate rematch since  he had to do two immediate rematches while he was champion. It appears that those pleas were heard as White has granted the rematch after initially indicating that he wanted Edgar to move down to the featherweight division since he’s an undersized lightweight. He offered Edgar an immediate title shot against the current UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo, but Edgar was quick to point out that Aldo cuts a massive amount of weight to fight there as well. So essentially he would still be undersized against the current champion.

We could have the makings of another instant classic. The only question is can Edgar make the necessary changes in his gameplan to defeat the larger Henderson a second time around?
