We first mentioned the UFC Sweden (UFC on FUEL TV 2) event last week, but the UFC is quickly putting together the fight card with several announcements via their website on yesterday. The event will take place on April 14th, in Stockholm, Sweden, at the Ericsson Globe Arena and will mark Zuffa’s first forray into the country. The event will be the second event to air on FUEL TV. There were five fights announced yesterday which can be found below:

  • Siyar Bahadurzada vs. Paulo Thiago
  • DeMarques Johnson vs. John Maguire
  • Cyrille Diabate vs. Jorgen Kruth
  • Francis Carmont vs. Magnus Cedenblad
  • Simeon Thoreson vs. Besam Yosef

Siyar Bahadurzada (20-4-1) will be making his UFC debut after having it delayed due to injuries. Bahadurzada has fought primarily in Holland and Japan with his last loss coming in 2008 against Jorge Santiago. Bahadurzada will take on UFC veteran Paulo Thiago (14-3) who is coming off a unanimous decision win against David Mitchell back at UFC 134. It was a nice win for Thiago after losing two consecutive fights. Thiago burst on the scene back at UFC 95 with an upset KO win over top ten welterweight Josh Koscheck.

DeMarques Johnson (16-9) is coming off a KO win over TUF alum Clay Harvison which took place at the UFC on FOX 1 event back in November 2011. Johnson is (2-2) in his last four fights with his last loss coming against Amir Sadollah, a fight that he took on a couple weeks notice. He’ll be facing John Maguire (17-3) who made his successful UFC debut in a unanimous decision win over Justin Edwards back at UFC 138. Maguire has fought exclusively in England, and has won his last six fights in a row.

Cyrille Diabate (17-8-1) is coming off a disappointing submission loss to Anthony Perosh back at UFC 138. Cane has gone (2-2) in the UFC with both losses coming via submission which has been the striker’s biggest weakness. Diabate will face UFC newcomer Jorgen Kruth (5-0) who has an extensive kickboxing background while fighting primarily in Sweden during his career.

Francis Carmont (17-7) is coming off a successful UFC debut in a unanimous decision win over Chris Camozzi back at UFC 137. The French mixed martial artist will face UFC newcomer Magnus Cedenblad (10-3) who is a Swedish mixed martial artist that’s on a seven fight week streak dating back to 2009.

The last fight announced so far will feature two UFC newcomers in Simeon Thoreson and Besam Yosef. Thoreson is a Norwegian mixed martial artist with an overall record of (16-2-1) with 14 wins via submission. Thoreson has fought primarily in England for the majority of his career. Yosef is a Swedish mixed martial artist with an overall record of (6-0) with three wins via submission and two wins via TKO/KO. Yosef has fought exclusively in Sweden during his entire career.

UPDATE:

The UFC announced the main event for the UFC on FUEL TV 2 event later today. Sweden’s own Alexander Gustafsson will take on MMA veteran Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in a light heavyweight showdown. This is a good play by the UFC to get some exposure for Gustafsson in his home country as well as to casual fans by headlining the event.

This is a bout that I called for in our UFC 141 let’s play matchmaker edition and it only makes sense as both fighters fought recently and are coming off impressive TKO wins respectively. Gustafsson (13-1) is coming off a two minute KO victory over Vladimir Matyushenko at UFC 141. Nogueira (20-5) is coming off a TKO victory over MMA veteran Tito Ortiz at UFC 140. Gustaffson’s only loss is to rising prospect and now teammate Phil Davis who beat Nogueira last April. Nogueira was coming off back to back losses prior to the win over Ortiz.
