M-1 Challenge 27 took place Friday, Oct. 14, at Grand Canyon University Arena in Phoenix, Ariz. In the main event, and making his first title defense was M-1 light heavyweight champ Vinny Magalhaes taking on Russian Sambo champion and fellow BJJ black belt Mikhail Zayats.

Ironically, it was not a submission that won the fight for ADCC 2011 champ Vinny Magalhaes. Instead, with less than four minutes remaining in the bout, the TUF 8 veteran threw a right hand then a soccer style head kick that hurt Zayats and dropped him to his knees. Magalhaes then finished him off with a few punches.

If you listen closely at the very beginning of the fight, you can hear Magalhaes’ corner telling him to throw the high kick. Of course the kick that ended it was two full rounds later, but still it is obviously a technique he has been working on. And there was some great action in-between. Enjoy.
