The UFC on Versus 6 event will take place on Saturday night at the Verizon Center in Washington D.C. The first televised fight of the night will be a lightweight bout between Mac Danzig and Matt Wiman. These two fighters have some history as they fought each other last year at UFC 115 with the bout ending in a controversial stoppage. Wiman locked in a guillotine choke on Danzig and referee Yves Lavigne stopped the fight thinking Danzig was unconscious when in fact he was fine. Let’s see if the outcome will be any different the second time around.
Mac Danzig comes into this fight with a career record of (20-8) with 10 wins via submission and 5 wins via TKO/KO. Danzig was last seen in action at UFC 124 knocking out TUF 2 champion Joe Stevenson. Danzig has solid striking and is well versed in submissions, but usually has problems with opponents with good wrestling games.
Matt Wiman comes into this fight with a career record of (13-6) with 4 wins coming via TKO/KO and 4 wins via submission. Wiman was last seen in action back at UFC 132 losing a very close fight against Dennis Siver. Wiman has solid striking along with being versed in submissions as well. However, he is the better wrestler of the two fighters in this contest.
Bet on Fighting has Wiman as the betting favorite at (-180) and Danzig as the underdog at (+150).
Those odds are about right. As I mentioned the wrestling of Wiman will be the difference in this fight. I expect Wiman to strike enough to set up his takedowns and then work single leg takedowns to get Danzig to the mat. Only 10% of Danzig’s submission wins have come with being on his back so the likelyhood of him submitting Wiman from that position is pretty low as Wiman has never been submitted in MMA. However, if Danzig can keep it standing he certainly could pick his shots and pull off the decision win or possibly knock Wiman out. However, Wiman has only been knocked out once which came in his UFC debut against Spencer Fisher.
Wiman should take the decision here.
