Jack Shields (left) was an ever-present presence whenever his son Jake competed.

ProMMAnow.com (www.prommanow.com) is sad to report that Jack Shields, the father and manager of former Strikeforce middleweight champion and current UFC welterweight Jake Shields, died Monday at his home in the Sacramento, Calif., area at the age of 67.

The fighter posted on his Facebook page Monday evening:

“Lost my father manager and one of my best friends today!! R.I.P Jack you will be greatly missed and loved by many.”

The elder Shields was diagnosed with congestive heart failure last year, however, the exact cause of death is yet to be determined.

According to the fighter, his father had been working on some sponsorships for his upcoming bout  next month versus Jake Ellenberger at UFC Fight Night 25. He sat down to rest, fell asleep, and never woke up.

Jack Shields, playing the dual role of father-manager was always present whenever Jake fought and was often present during training. He would be at the press conferences, the weigh-ins, and was always there to support his son as he climbed the ranks to become Strikeforce champion and challenged for the UFC title.

Fans can show their support for Jake on Twitter at @jakeshieldsajj and on his Facebook page at www.facebook.com/jakeshieldsajj.
