FRISCO, Texas — “Shark Fights 17: Horwich vs. Rosholt 2” takes place this evening at The Dr. Pepper Arena in Frisco, Texas, and features a middleweight match-up between Matt Horwich and Jake Rosholt in the main event.

Rosholt will be looking to even the score with Horwich, who won a third round TKO over the four-time All-American at Xtreme Fight Night in Nov. 2010.

Also featured on tonight’s card is former UFC heavyweight champion Ricco Rodriguez, who will take on late replacement Doug Williams in a 230-pound catchweight bout. There were some reports this fight was in limbo, so keep your fingers crossed.

Michael Schiavello and Frank Trigg are calling the fights. Both Trigg and Schiavello are decked out in suits and cowboy hats, looking mighty mighty dapper, I must say.

It looks like the Rodriguez vs. Williams co-main event is still on, so that’s good.

Alan Jouban vs. Andrew Goldthwaite

Round 1 –  Goldthwaite attacks with punches but gets put on his back. Jouban has side control, puts some knees into his ribs. Goldthwaite gets to his knees and back to his feet. Jouban held onto his neck though and put him right back down. Jouban back in side control, now inside half guard. Goldthwaite gets up once again but gets put right back down. Jouban has his back, now full mount, trying to set up a triangle, he rolls to his back, still holding the triangle. Goldthwaite sticks his waist up in the air and saves himself as time runs out. Jouban 10-9.

Round 2 – Big inside leg kick from Goldthwaite, another one. Again. Jouban with a leg kick, brings Goldthwaite to one knee. Gives another one that stuns Goldthwaite. Switch kick to the head from Jouban then rocks him with a punch and starts pouring it on. Big leg kick and then a big left hook from Jouban. Jouban lands a punch and Goldthwaite goes down. Jouban follows up before the bell. 10-9 Jouban.

Round 3 – Body shot from Goldthwaite. Jouban grabs a collar tie and puts Goldthwaite on his back, he reverses and is on top inside Jouban’s full guard. Jouban pulls rubber guard, mission control. Elbows to the head from Jouban. Ref calls for action. Eddie Bravo is in Jouban’s corner. Goldthwaite not able to to do much as Jouban has him locked up. Ref stands them up. One two from Goldthwaite. Jouban fires back with three punches that connect and Goldthwaite goes down, Jouban follows up with one more big shot and Goldthwaite is done like a burnt fish.

Erik Perez vs. Douglas Frey

Round 1 – Fry with a right cross, leg kick. Perez with a body kick. A left cross and a leg kick. Frey fires back. Perez with a nice leg kick. They exchange one two’s. Big overhand right from Frey. Frey with another right. Body kick and a left from Perez, he sweeps Frey’s leg causing him to go to touch the ground briefly. Perez takes Frey’s back, has one hook in. Goes for the choke but it’s over his chin. Frey spins and ends up on top inside full guard. Frey smashes down with an elbow. Perez going for an armbar. Frey pulls out, drops down for a guillotine and ends up on his back with Perez on top. Frey gets to his knees and Perez takes his back. Frey scrambles and Perez has full mount, lands an elbow. Frey gives up his back, Perez drops two nice elbows, locks on the rear naked choke. He lets it go and lands punches. Frey gets to his back and Perez has mount, lands punches, Frey squirms but Perez takes the round 10-9.

Round 2 – Perez with a left jab, lands solid. Body shot from Frey. Big leg kick from Frey. Collar tie from Perez but Frey puts him on his back. Perez gets to his knees. Frey drops down for a guillotine but Perez pulls his head out.  Perez starts with the ground and pound and retains top control. Frey pushes Perez off, gets to his feet. Perez shoots, gets the double leg takedown. Perez in half guard, moves to full mount. Perez landing some solid right hands. He postures up, Frey squirms, they roll as Perez takes his back with a figure four body lock. Twenty seconds left in the round as Perez fights for the choke. 10-9 for Perez.

Round 3 – Big leg kick from Perez. Right hand from Perez. Nice left hook from Frey. Perez shoots. Frey gives him some elbows to the head as he fights it off. Frey drops down for a guillotine. Perez pops out and is inside full guard and starts with the ground and pound. Lands a nice right. Perez traps Frey’s right arm and lands a nice left. Ref stands them up. Two minutes left. Knee to the gut from Frey. Perez catches his kick, pushes him to the cage and drops levels for a takedown. He puts Frey down with his back to the cage. Frey makes it to his feet, grabs a single leg and gets Perez down but he gets right up. Nice right from Perez, big knee to the gut. Big right from Perez. Both guys miss with spinning backfists. Emanuel Newton vs. Ilir Latifi

Round 1 – Body kick from Newton mostly blocked. Body kick from Newton scores. Again. Side kick. Big right counter from Latifi, Newton eats it, does not flinch. The fists start flying back and forth. Nice exchange with both fighters landing some nice shots. Clinched against the cage. Right from Latifi, then back to the clinch game. They trade knees. Latifi backs out and the re-set in the center. Body kick from Newton, counter right from Latifi. Newton misses a head kick, walking down Latifi. Body kick from Newton, clinched, knees from Newton. 10-9 for Newton.

Round 2 – Newton stalking, lands a nice right. Latifi lands a counter right and a left. Latifi being very cautious. Right hand from Newton. Body shot from Latifi with two minutes left. Latifi grabs a kick tries for the takedown but Newton gets free of it. Right counter from Latifi on the break. Newton throwing a lot of kicks this round but nothing landing very solid. This round looked like a sparring match at many points. 10-9 for Newton.

Round 3 – Latifi clinches up, gets tossed to the ground but he gets right back up. Newton stalking. Body kick from Newton. Latifi pours it on strong now though and lands a couple big punches. He backs out and Newton seems unfazed. Newton goes back to his kicks. Latifi misses a head kick. One minute to go. Latifi unleashes the punch combo again as he backs Newton against the cage. Big left from Latifi, then a big right. Newton stalking. 10-9 for Latifi. He should have fought like that the whole fight. ProMMAnow.com scores the fight 29-28 for Newton.

NOTE: They initially read the result wrong and announced Latifi as the winner. After a unanimous WTF by everyone watching, they came back and announced Newton as the winner.

Ricco Rodriguez vs. Doug Williams

Round 1 – Ricco looks to extend his 11 fight win streak. Ricco is a -1100 favorite. Williams stuffs a takedown. Leg kick from Ricco. Ricco drops levels, gets a trip takedown and is inside Williams guard. Ricco pushes him to the cage and starts with the ground and pound. Ricco in side control Williams trying to control Ricco’s arms. Ricco moves to full mount. Williams bucks. Ricco looking for the armbar, goes for it, can’t get it, cage in the way and he moves back to full mount. Ricco pins one arm to the ground, drops an elbow. Ricco sinks in the rear naked choke and it’s over. Williams was severely out-matched. Ricco honestly shouldn’t even be proud of this win. It meant nothing. He didn’t even work up a sweat. Props to Williams for taking the fight at the last minute. He was well out of his league.

Matt Horwich vs. Jake Rosholt

Round 1 – Here we go into the multiverse. Rosholt is the favorite to win. I would take that bet against Rosholt. Big leg kick from Rosholt and Horwich hops in the air. Lazy leg kick from Horwich. Leg kick from both and a left from Horwich. Right to the body from Rosholt. One two three punch combo from Horwich and Rosholt pushes him to the cage. Horwich pushes him off and eats a body kick. Horwich fires off several punches that connect. Rosholt ties him up. Leg kick from Rosholt. Body shot from Rosholt. Less than a minute. Leg kick from Horwich. Rosholt shoots, puts Horwich on his back. Horwich tells him to come to the ground. Rosholt stands over him calmly and lands a couple punches. ProMMAnow.com scores the round 10-9 for Rosholt.

Round 2 – Nice couple shots from Horwich. Leg kick from Horwich, again. He checks Rosholt’s leg kick. Horwich lands a nice punch combo. Rosholt shoots pushes him to the cage. Knee from Rosholt. They exchange and Rosholt puts Horwich on his back but just sets him down and doesn’t even go to the ground. Horwich gets up. Counter left hook from Horwich as he ducked a hook from Rosholt. Rosholt puts him to the cage. They break. Nice left hook from Rosholt. A string of tape his hanging off his glove. Left hook from Rosholt. Big leg kick. Head kick from Horwich scores. Body kick from Rosholt. Rosholt wraps the tape around his wrist. Big leg kick and Rosholt puts Horwich on his back, stands over him with punches. 10-9 Rosholt.

Round 3 – Big leg kick from Rosholt and he puts Horwich on his back.Horwich grabs his leg, lets go, stands up. Horwich ties him up, Rosholt pushes him to the cage. Rosholt backs out. Body kick from Horwich. Rosholt throws him to the ground. Horwich gets up, lands a left hook. Horwich is bleeding over his right eye. They tie up. Four punch combo from Rosholt. Rosholt keeps doing these ugly Karate Kid crane kicks that miss. Rosholt puts Horwich on his back, stands over him with a couple punches. Horwich gets up. Rosholt lands on the chin. Ties up Horwich against the cage with 1:30 left in the fight. Short body shot from Horwich. Rosholt fires off a combo and Horwich fires back. They move to the center. Another stupid jumping kick from Rosholt. He puts Horwich on hsi back and stands over him. Almost eats an upkick. Horwich gets up. Spinning backfist misses, and a left hook from Rosholt before the bell. Horwich does some push-ups. 10-9 and 29-28 for Rosholt.
