According to a post on the ADCC Facebook page, this year’s ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championships will feature a pair of masters superfights. In one bout, Eddie Bravo will return to the mat to rematch Royler Gracie. In the second superfight, Mario Sperry will challenge Renzo Gracie.
Bravo shocked the grappling world in 2003 when he submitted Gracie with a triangle choke at the ADCC tournament. Although Bravo lost in the next round, he used the momentum from a victory over a Gracie to establish his own brand called 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu. He has not competed since 2003.
Gracie retired from MMA competition in 2007 with a 5-4-1 record. On the grappling mats he is a two-time CBJJ Pan American champion, four-time CBJJ World champion and two-time ADCC champion.
Renzo Gracie made his UFC debut at UFC 112, but fell to former champion Matt Hughes. The loss dropped his MMA record to 13-7-1. He ia slo a ADCC champion and is credited with working with Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan to establish the tournament.
Sperry won the ADCC Absolute in 1998 and then won back-to-back superfights over Enson Inoue and Roberto Traven. His MMA record stands at 13-4.
The 2011 ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship takes place in Nottingham, England this summer. An exact date for the event has yet to be determined.
