NEWARK, N.J. — “UFC 128: Shogun vs. Jones” takes place this evening at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., and features a main event title fight between light heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and superstar contender Jon “Bones” Jones.

Kurt Pellegrino (156) vs. Gleison Tibau (155)

Round 1 – Tibau misses with a couple punches and Pellegrino fires back but also misses. Tibau grabs a single and pushes Pellegrino against the cage but fails to take him down with the initial attempt. Knee to the body from Tibau, drops levels but Pellegrino defends and Tibau backs up and they square up. They both miss with a few punches. Pellegrino shoots, grabs a single, can’t get it. Clinched against the cage. Knee to the body from Tibau and he gets the takedown but Pellegrino bounces right up. Pellegrino shoots, stuffed. Clinched, Tibau leans on him against the cage. Nice right and a combo from Pellegrino. ProMMAnow.com scores the round 10-9 for Pellegrino.

Round 2 – They both exchange punches but nothing landing here. Pellegrino swings with a combo but misses.Inside leg kick scores for Pellegrino. He rocks Tibau with a couple shots, then a right then picks Tibau up for a slam. Pellegrino on top in half guard landing some body shots. Pellegrino continues with elbows and punches to the body as Tibau attempts to get something going from the bottom. Pellegrino doing a good job of holding Tibau down, using his forearm across the throat and controlling his head. Tibau has full guard now. There’s a little blood on the top of Pellegrino’s head. Elbow to the face by Pellegrino but Tibau gets to his feet. Tibau has a cut over his eye and that may be where the blood came from on the top of Pellegrino’s head. Tibau tentative on his feet and the bell sounds. ProMMAnow.com scores the round 10-9 for Pellegrino.

Round 3 – Tibau swings a combo but misses, again, again. Pellegrino with a leg kick and Tibau with a head kick that skims the head of Pellegrino. Tibau swings, Pellegrino ducks. Left hand scores for Tibau, he misses with a one-two. Lands a right. Pellegrino swings and misses with a few combos. Tibau shoots, stuffed. Pellegrino’s nose bloodied up. Tibau scores with a couple punches and Pellegrino returns a couple, then shoots, stuffed and eats a couple punches in the process. Tibau gets the takedown and has side control. Pellegrino gives up his back and gets to his feet. He eats a couple shots in the process, shoots for a double, stuffed, pushes Tibau against the cage. Pellegrino goes for a single, lets it go. They separate and fire off punches, Tibau scores a takedown, on top inside full guard. Tibau with some ground and pound, body locks Pellegrino from behind. Pellegrino rolls at the bell looking for a kneebar. ProMMAnow.com scores the round 10-9 for Tibau and scores the fight 29-28 for Pellegrino. However, the first round is highly debatable as there was very little action. It could go either way and no one could really complain.

Ricardo Almeida (170) vs. Mike Pyle (171)

Round 1 – Leg kick for Almeida. Pyle returns it and Almeida fires one back. Pyle hunting. Almeida fires off a punch that misses. Pyle with a leg kick. Pyle closing in. Almeida with a right and Pyle fires back with an uppercut. Almeida clinches and Pyle trips him to the ground but lets him up. Pyle with a leg kick. Almeida shoots, stuffed. Pyle puts some knees into Almeida’s thighs. Almeida turns him to the cage from the clinch. Pyle escapes and backs out. Almeida shoots, gets it but Pyle bounces up, locks on a guillotine but Almeida is out. Right hand scores for Almeida, he shoots, Pyle stuffs it. They exchange knees to the thighs. Clinch battle, Pyle backs out, misses with a knee to the face. Close round. ProMMAnow.com scores it 10-9 for Pyle.

Round 2 – Leg kick from Pyle. Light leg kick from Almeida. Again. Side kick from Almeida scores and he gets a takedown. But Pyle gets right up. Clinched. They separate, knee to the body from Pyle and a right hand. Almeida gets a takedown but Pyle bounces right up. Body shot from Almeida. Right counter from Pyle, Almeida shoots, stuffed. Knee to the body from Pyle. They separate. Leg kick from Pyle. Leg kick from Almeida, again. Almeida shoots, gets it and Pyle looking for a kimura as they hit the ground. Thirty seconds left in the round. Pyle lets go of the kimura attempt. Almeida lands a few shots and that should secure him the round. ProMMAnow.com scores it 10-9 for Almeida.

Round 3 – Pyle with a leg kick. Again. Almeida misses a leg kick. Almeida misses a Superman punch, lands a kick to the thigh. Both guys misses with several punches. Body kick from Pyle but nothing behind it. Right hand from Almeida but Pyle trips him to the mat. Pyle with a hammerfist and he stands up. Almeida grabs Pyle’s leg and gets to his feet. Pyle got a little lazy there and got his leg caught by Almeida and allowed him to get up. Now they are clinched against the cage. Pyle lands a nice knee to the face. Leg kick from Almeida, he gets a quick takedown but Pyle bounces up, lands a knee to the body of Almeida. Almeida tries for a takedown but Pyle gets his own takedown at the bell. Very close fight. He fires back with a body kick but eats another big leg kick from Barboza. Leg kick from Njokuani, another one. Uppercut counter from Njokuani. Big leg kick from Barboza. Nice left straight from Njokuani. Front kick. Left hand from Barboza but eats a counter right. Njokuani changing stances regularly, he lands a nice right. Barboza hunting, lands a jab. Njokuani complaining about an eye poke but Ref tells him to keep fighting. Big leg kick from Barboza. Inside leg kick from Njokuani, then a head kick. Left straight. Left hook. Right hand. He eats a right from Barboza but lands a counter right. Leg kick from Njokuani, then a right hook. Njokuani came back nicely, but overall ProMMAnow.com scores the round for Barboza 10-9.

Round 2 – Left hand from Njokuani, again. Leg kick. Left hand from Barboza. Big leg kick from Barboza. Punch, high kick from Njokuani. Left straight. Njokuani’s hands seem faster than Barboza. Barboza with a spinning back kick lands nicely. Barboza gets his high kick caught, Njokuani runs him across the cage holding his head and dumps him on his back. Njokuani lands a nice punch on the ground but they get right back up. Spinning elbow from Njokuani just misses. Leg kick from Barboza. Front kick Njokuani, then a leg kick. Right hand from Barboza. Then a left. Njokuani putting on a lot of pressure this round with a constant attack. Wheel kick misses from Barboza, misses a punch, picks Njokuani up with a big takedown. Njokuani gets up at the bell. ProMMAnow.com scores the round 10-9 for Njokuani.

Round 3 – Front kick from Njokuani. Leg kick from Barboza, again. Inside leg kick and front kick from Njokuani, punch, leg kick. Inside leg kick from Njokuani, punch, kick. Body kick from Njokuani scores nicely. Barboza checks a leg kick. Misses a leg kick but lands a right. Lands a leg kick and a left. Straight left from Njokuani and a leg kick counter. Njokuani’s work rate keeping Barboza on the defensive but Barboza lands a couple nice punches and a head kick. Njokuani fires back with punches a jumping knee to the body that takes the breath out of Barboza. Right hand and leg kick from Njokuani, high kick. Turning side kick from Barboza scores. Njokuani with a straight kick. Barboza with a turning side kick again scores. One minute to go. Left straight and a right from Njokuani. Barboza grabs a leg kick and gets the takedown with 20 seconds left. Njokuani gets up and rushes at Barboza but eats a wheel kick that stops Njokuani and staggers him, almost knocks him out cold. Wow! Very close round. ProMMAnow.com scores the round 10-9 for Barboza.

Luiz Cane (205.5) vs. Eliot Marshall (205)

Round 1 – Eliot stuffed. Head kick from Marshall blocked. Leg kick from Cane. Marshall stuffed again. Cane lands a left. Leg kick from Cane, then lands a one-two. Big left from Cane. Marshall goes down and Cane lands one the attack with a barrage of punches and all Marshall can do is cover up at this point. He tries to roll for a kneebar but is eating an onslaught of punishment. The ref finally saves him after about a hundred punches. I have noticed Marshall doesn’t react well once he starts getting hit. This is one of the main reason I picked Cane to win this fight which you can read about in our Staff Picks.

Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic (229) vs. Brendan Schaub (245)

Round 1 – The first time I remember NOT hearing Cro Cop walk out to Duran Duran. Quite a few boos for Schaub. And a lot of cheers for Cro Cop. Schaub with a few feints. High kick is blocked by Cro Cop. Schaub comes on strong and lands some uppercuts from the clinch. Cro Cop swings and clinches, knee to the body. PUnches Schaub’s thigh. Schaub turns him against the cage. Right hand over the top by Schaub from the clinch. Ref gives Schaub a strong warning for a strike to the back of the head. Cro Cop swings but Schaub shoots and puts him on his back. Up kick by Cro Cop connects on Schaub. Schaub dives in with a punch and is back inside his full guard. Cro Cop holding on stifling the action. A few nice right hands by Schaub connect. Schaub postures up but his shots are blocked. Cro Cop almost sweeps Schaub and gets to his feet. Schaub goes for a trip takedown but Cro Cop defends it. Knee to the body from Schaub. Elbow from Cro Cop and a little uppercut from Schaub at the bell. ProMMAnow.com scores the round 10-9 for Schaub.

Round 2 – Schaub swings and misses. Head kick from Cro Cop is blocked and sets up the takedown for Schaub. Cro Cop has full guard and lands an up kick as Schaub starts to get up. Cro Cop is warned because he still had a knee on the ground. Punch to the thigh from Cro Cop. Knees to the body by both guys. Clinch battle right now. Body shot from Schaub and a couple knees. Uppercut from Cro Cop. Elbow from Cro Cop. A minute and a half to go. Schaub is bleeding quite a bit. Ref takes away one point from Schaub for a punch to the back of the head. Head kick from Cro Cop is blocked. Right hand from Schaub and they clinch. Uppercut and an elbow from Cro Cop. ProMMAnow.com scores it 9-9 (due to point deduction).

Round 3 – The blood is coming from Schaub’s nose which could be broken. Cro Cop lands a kick to the groin and time out is called. Clinched and Cro Cop lands a left. Schaub with the takedown. Cro Cop lands several rights off his back. Cro Cop kicks him off and gets up but Schaub takes him right back down. Schaub also has a cut over his eye. Schaub tries to pass guard but can’t get it. Cro Cop hanging on. Schaub gets to half guard. Body shots from Cro Cop. Cro Cop gets up, clinch. They separate. Left straight from Cro Cop. Another left. Head kick from Cro Cop mostly blocked. One and a half minutes to go. Schaub shoots, stuffed. Lands a left jab. Schaub drops him with a big right hand then finishes it with one more for good measure. Just like that and this fight is over folks. Huge power from Schaub. Great way to come back by Schaub. He tells Cro Cop he’s the reason he got started.

Nate Marquardt (186) vs. Dan Miller (185)

Round 1 – Left hand by Miller. Clinch, Miller shoots, grabs a single and Nate looks for a choke. Miller is up lands a knee, Marquardt answers in like. Miller grabs a single leg and they hop all over the cage and gets Nate on his butt against the cage. Miller grabs both legs and tries to flatten Marquardt out. Boos start. Marquardt gets up and slams Miller. Miller locks on a guillotine but Miller only has half guard and Nate gets his head out.  Marquardt inside full guard now. Big elbow from Marquardt, another one, but it’s mostly blocked. Ref stands them up. One minute to go. Big right hand by Marquardt scores. He picks Miller up and slams him. Miller looking for a kimura. Ten seconds to go. Nate with a final punch before the bell. ProMMAnow.com scores it 10-9 for Marquardt.

Round 2 – Leg kick from Marquardt. Miller returns it. Marquardt lands a punch, and a nice head kick scores, then an inside leg kick. Marquardt lands another punch and MIller lands a right. Body shot from Marquardt. Two right hands and a head kick from Marquardt. Miller gets a takedown though but Marquardt gets back to his feet. Clinch battle, they separate. Nice right hand from Marquardt. Legt kick from Marquardt. Right hand from Marquardt. And a left jab, another right. And Marquardt gets a takedown. Miller locks on a guillotine from full guard. Marquardt pops his head out. Nice big elbows from Marquardt. Thirty seconds to go. ProMMAnow.com scores the round 10-9 for Marquardt.

Round 3 – Miller, who came into the fight on a week’s notice, is breathing hard. Big right from Marquardt and another head kick scores. Right hand from Marquardt, another one. Huge leg kick from Marquardt. Right hand leaping in from Marquardt. Miller bleeding over his left eye. Nice right from Marquardt clips Miller. Miller shoots, stuffed. Three minutes to go. Miller still working for a single. Marquardt scrambles and ends up inside full guard. Big elbows from Marquardt as he postures up. Miller’s face bloody. Miller looks at a kimura but Marquardt easily moves out of it and goes back to punishing him. One minute to go and a few boos from the crowdd at the ground and pound. Another elbow from Marquardt. Miller throwing his legs up for a triangle or armbar, lands a couple elbows on Marquardt’s head. ProMMAnow.com scores the round 10-9 for Marquardt and the fight 30-27 for Marquardt.

Left hook from Shalorus then a leg kick. Body kick from Miller. Body shot from Shalorus. Body shot from Miller. Jumping knee from Miller, Shalorus catches it and Miller falls down but gets right up. Big leg kick from Shalorus. Leg kick from Miller. Leg kick from Shalorus but eats a counter knee. Big head kick from Miller lands solid. Shalorus stands firm. Right hook from Miller. Body kick from Miller, drops down for a guillotine and Shalorus ends up on top inside full guard. Thirty seconds to go. Body shots from Shalorus and they get stood up. Round 2 – Miller comes out swinging, body kick from Shalorus. Both men right in the pocket. Shalorus with a leg kick. Body shot. Shalorus grabs a leg and Miller attempts a flying triangle but falls on his back. He’s up. Leg kick from Miller. Miller gets a single leg takedown, takes Shalorus’ back immediately and looking for the choke. Miller with a body triangle. Miller going for a palm to palm choke, lets it go. One minute to go. Round 3 – Left hand from Miller. Again. Clinch, knee to the body from Miller. Big leg kick from Shalorus., shoots, stuffed. Shalorus takes a low shot, Ref lets it go after Shalorus says he is okay. Left to the body from Miller. Misses with a combo. Lands a leg kick partially. Nice uppercut from Miller rocks Shalorus’ head back then drops him with a big knee to the face. Miller finishes him off with a swarm of punches and the ref saves him. Beautiful finish by Miller in front of his home crowd.

Round 1 – UFC debut for both guys. Clinch, wrestle, Wineland puts him against the cage. Knee to the body from Faber. Wineland lands a shot as Faber trips on a takedown attempt. Faber shoots, stuffed. Clinch, wrestle. Wineland puts him against the cage. Faber tries to throw him but can’t. Wineland seems to be possibly stronger than Faber. Wineland with a body lock. Wineland gets a body lock from behind and slams Faber. Faber gets up. Left hand from Faber. Faber misses with a head kick. Right hand from Faber. Left jab from Wineland. Left jab from Wineland, Faber shoots, picks up Wineland but gets stuffed. Wineland shrugged off another takedown. Counter right by Wineland. Big right from Faber. Another right. Wineland swings and misses. Faber slips a couple shots. Wineland with a leg kick. Hard to score that round. ProMMAnow.com scores it 10-9 for Wineland.

Round 2 – Body kick from Faber. Wineland misses with a combo. Right hand from Faber scores. Faber checks a leg kick. Faber grabs a single and trips his back leg for the takedown. Faber inside full guard now. Faber postures up on his feet. Drops down with an elbow. Another one. Faber picks Wineland up and slams him. More elbows from Faber. Faber postures up again, throws some shots, Wineland tries to get up but Faber controls him. Faber postures up with more elbows, right and left. Not landing too hard. Faber throws some punches but they Wineland makes him miss. He slams Wineland, lands a punch. ProMMAnow.com scores that round for Faber 10-9.

Round 3 – The first round was close and could have gone for Wineland. Wineland misses with several punches and Faber partially lands a right. Body shot from Faber. Faber shoots, stuffed. Knee to the body. Clinch, release. Inside leg kick for Wineland. Faber’s shot stuffed again. Clinched. Wineland with underhooks, Faber escapes. Faber fakes a shot and lands a big right. Slips a punch and lands another shot. Right, left land for Faber. Faber shoots, stuffed. Faber stays on it, gets it with a little over a minute to go. Faber slams him from inside guard. Faber postures up with elbows. He’s getting a bit wild with these shots. He postures up with more elbows. Ten seconds to go, and that’s it. They hug it out. Round 1 – Jones walks out to Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind.” I still can’t believe Jones is already fighting for the title. Shogun sticks out his hand and they shake. Don’t blink folks. Flying knee from Jones, head kick. Shogun swings misses. Jones misses with a spinning kick. Jones takes Rua down. Elbow from Jones. Body shot from Jones. Underhooks from Rua. Rua throws his legs up. Jones trying to move to side control. Jones on top, Rua gets full guard. Jones with a short elbow. Rua trying to sweep. Small elbow from Jones. Jones postures up, Rua trying to get up, takes a knee and a big left punche. Rua with a left. Rua could be hurt. Jones misses a big uppercut. Knee from Jones. Big body shot and knee from Jones. Jones remains calm even though Rua appears hurt. One two from Shogun. Shogun goes for a kneebar but ends up on bottom. Ten seconds left. ProMMAnow.com scores the round 10-9 for Jones.

Round 2 – Shogun checks a leg kick. Shogun misses a big punch as Bones slips it. Spinning elbow connects for Jones. Big left for Jones. Leg kick and high kick for Jones. No leg kicks yet for Shogun. Knee to the body from Jones. Rua backs out, misses with punches. Jones with a right. Body shot from Jones. Left straight connects from Jones. Front kick, leg kick, Superman punch and a body shot. Shogun with a leg kick but Jones takes him down and lands a punch. Jones inside full guard. Elbow from Jones. Shogun already appeared tired at the start of this round. Two minutes to go. Jones in half guard landing short elbows here and there as Shogun holds on. Jones being very patient but staying busy enough. Elbow to the body from Jones. Jones looks for a leg lock but the bell sounds. ProMMAnow.com scores it 10-9 for Jones.

Round 3 – Leg kick fron Jones and Shogun misses with punches. Jones misses an uppercut and hook. Jones misses a head kick and Shogun dives for a kneebar. Jones gets out and puts Shogun on his back. Elbow from Jones inside half guard. Jones lands a nice few punches, elbows from inside guard. Body head punch and an enormous left hand and a right and more elbows from Jones. The ref is almost ready to stop it, Shogun gets to his feet and Jones finishes him off with an enormous shot to the body the crumples the champion. Jon Jones is the new UFC world light heavyweight champion.

NOTE: They bring Rashad Evans into the cage. Evans congratulates Jones and they ask Evans how he feels about challenging Jones for the title. Evans says it’s unfortunate but that’s just the way it is.
