Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez (18-2) has signed a contract extension with the promotion that will keep him there for the foreseeable future.

Although the terms of the deal were not disclosed, Strikeforce announced on Feb. 7 that Melendez signed a multi-year agreement.

“There are a lot of great fights out there for me — lots of challenges,” Melendez said in a press release. “I can’t wait to get back into the cage, do my thing and show the world that I’m still at the top of my game.”

Melendez lost the Strikeforce title to Josh Thomson in June 2008 in an epic five-round brawl, but bounced back with wins over Rodrigo Damm and Mitsuhiro Ishida. In the rematch with Thomson, Melendez took back his title with another entertaining five-round match.

Most recently, Melendez defeated Japanese submission ace Shinya Aoki at Strikeforce: Nashville on April 17 of last year.
