Strikeforce Challengers 13 results, play-by-play

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — ProMMAnow.com (www.prommanow.com) is on the scene at Municipal Auditorium this evening for “Strikeforce Challengers 13” which airs live on Showtime at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on West Coast). Showtime is having their Free Preview Weekend so everyone can watch, even if you don’t normally subscribe!

Our LIVE play-by-play coverage will start at approximately 7 p.m. as the first preliminary card bout starts out. The prelims are absolutely jam-packed with local talent and the main card, headlined by undefeated welterweight Tyron Woodley taking on Team Quest’s Tarec Saffiedine is stacked as well.

Strikeforce Challengers 13 play-by-play:

Luke Sanders vs. Josh Jarvis

Round 1 – Sanders to the clinch after landing a knee. Both guys trade knees, Sanders works and gets the take down. Sanders moves to full mount immediately. Jarvis works to retain guard, but Sanders is right back in the full mount. Sanders postures and lands some punches. Then scores with some big left hands. Jarvis rolls and gives up his back, and Sanders looks for the choke. Sanders gives up the punch then postures and lands a barrage of right hands. Jarvis scrambles and escapes mount, but Sanders stands over the guard and is dropping huge punches to the bloody face of Jarvis. Sanders back to full mount again. Sanders with big, punishing left hands again, and the referee stops it.

Jeremy Boczulak vs. Jason Blackford

Round 1 – Jason throws first, but Boczulak immediately shoots in and gets the take down. Jeremy in side control, looking to land left hands. Back to the feet and Jason throws a knee, and Boczulak shoots again and gets the take down. Jason going for the guillotine, but Boczulak works free and is landing left hands. Blackford scrambles and goes for a leg, and Boczulak goes for a guillotine. He lets go, then gets another take down. Boczulak standing over the guard and lands a big right hand, then alternates with the left hand. Blackford goes for a leg, but Jeremy maintains top position and is punishing Blackford with short left hands. Boczulak postures and lands a couple of right hands. Boczulak now in side control, then transitions to full mount. Blackford rolls and turtles, giving up his back. Blackford scrambles and now Boczulak is now back on top scoring with right hands. Blackford scrambles and is off his back and looking for a leg, but Boczulak spins and takes his back. Blackford is now on his back with 10 seconds to go, then scrambles and lands some big punches at the bell. ProMMAnow scores Round 1 for Boczulak, 10-9.

Round 2 – Boczulak shoots and gets the take down right out the gate and is back on top looking to pass. Boczulak is in side mount, and now looking for the crucifix, but Blackburn scrambles, but Boczulak is still on top and scoring with punches. Blackburn is looking for a leg again, but Boczulak defends. Blackford gets the foot and is working on the heel, and Boczulak is in trouble. Blackburn still working, and the tap comes.

Chris Barnhizer vs. Karl Willis

Round 1 – Willis swings but misses to start. Chris feints with the jab, then eats a jab from Willis. Another jab by Willis. Chris shoots but Willis steps away out of danger. Willis working the jab. Chris looks to shoot again and Willis throws a 3 punch combo that just misses. Chris throws his jab, and Willis counters and scores. Chris lands a left hand then steps back. Chris shoots, grabs the double, and gets a big slam. Chris to full mount, postures and is peppering Willis with both left and right hands. After a 20 punch barrage, Chris looks for an arm, secures it and locks up the arm bar. Willis taps and it’s over.

Charles McTorry vs. Krishaun Gilmore

Round 1 – Inside leg kick by McTorry, then he goes high with the kick. McTorry shoots, and eats a big right hand. McTorry snatches Gilmore up and takes him for a ride with a huge slam. McTorry quickly moves to side mount. Gilmore controlling the posture of McTorry early. McTorry works free for a couple of right hands, as Gilmore works to get to his guard. McTorry standing over Gilmore and throws a big right hand as Gilmore stands. Back to the feet. Gilmore lands a kick then a combo, connecting with a big left hand. McTorry just misses with a big overhand right. McTorry lands with the kick upstairs, then to the leg. McTorry fakes the shoot, and scores with a kick to the body again. Gilmore is stalking now. McTorry lands straight down the pipe with a right hand, then takes the fight to the ground. McTorry is in the half guard of Gilmore. McTorry postures and lands some big punches. McTorry looking to finish raining down punches right before the bell. ProMMAnow scores Round 1 for McTorry, 10-9.

Round 2 – Gilmore leans in for a jab, and McTorry counters with a left hand that lands. Gilmore scores to the body with a kick. Gilmore steps in and lands a big kick again… right to the jewels. Back to the fight. McTorry goes to the head with the kick but it’s blocked. McTorry to the body with the kick. Gilmore scores with a leg kick. Gilmore comes back with the inside leg kick. Gilmore with 2 more leg kicks, the he goes high, but misses. Gilmore with another kick, and McTorry clinches and goes for the take down. Gilmore defends as McTorry rides him into the cage, and gets the take down. McTorry on top now, in the half guard. McTorry moves to full mount, and Gilmore immediately rolls. McTorry flattens him out and goes for the rear naked choke. He locks it up and gets the tap within seconds.

Round 1 – The bell sounds, and Schmitt goes for the head kick. West ducks, steps in and lands a devastating left hook, then a right that floors Schmitt. West follows up with another big punch and it’s all over!

Dustin Ortiz vs. Matt Horning

Round 1 Ortiz with a leg kick to start. Then another. Horning scores with a right hand, Ortiz clinches and gets the take down. Ortiz moves immediately to side control. Horning scrambles, Ortiz goes for a leg, and Horning goes for the guillotine. Ortiz works free, and is now on top. Horning goes for the neck of Ortiz, but Ortiz is out. Horning stands for a second, then gets put right back down. Ortiz is punishing the body of Horning with right hands. Full mount for Ortiz now. Very high mount. Ortiz scores with right hands, and Horning rolls. Ortiz goes for the rear naked choke, but Horning scrambles out and is back on his feet. Ortiz with a leg kick. Ortiz with a glancing left hook. Ortiz with the kick, and Horning counters and lands a right hand. Horning with the kick, and Ortiz is stalking. Ortiz with the head kick, then a leg kick. And another. Ortiz back upstairs again. Round 2 – Double jab from Horning but he doesn’t land it. Ortiz doubles up on his jab, then lands a right hand. Leg kick from Ortiz. Horning misses with a big overhand right, and Ortiz steps in and lands. More kicks from Ortiz. Horning goes high with the kick but misses. Ortiz lands his double jab then steps back. Leg kick from Ortiz, then he shoots but is stuffed. Horning grabs his neck and pulls guard looking for the guillotine. Ortiz works free quickly and moves to mount. Horning scrambles and is up to his feet. Ortiz with yet another leg kick, and he has Horning moving backward. Big right hand from Ortiz. Horning scores with a jab, but then eats some big kicks. Horning looks like his lead leg is hurt. Ortiz lands a big right hand then clinches. The leg kicks are doing major damage to Horning. Horning with a kick to the body. Overhand right by Horning as Ortiz kicks. Ortiz lands a big left hand, then steps in with a right. Horning shoots and gets a leg, but Ortiz scrambles. Ortiz gives up his back and Horning is trying to get a hook in while standing. The fight hits the mat, and Ortiz scrambles and is back on top. Ortiz locks up a rear naked at the bell. Round 3 – Ortiz misses with the left but connects with the right against the cage. Ortiz takes the fight to the ground, but has Horning on his back. Ortiz dumps him off the top, and is now back into full mount position. Ortiz working high in the mount. Horning trying to control his posture. Ortiz to the body. Horning rolls and gives up his back. Ortiz is very high on the back. Horning trying to roll, then rolls right back to his back. Big punches from Ortiz now. Horning rolls again, and Ortiz goes to the left hands. The referee steps in and stops it.

John Salter vs. Casey Huffman

Round 1 – Casey with the jab. Salter counters with a right hand. John shoots but is stuffed. John goes for the single against the cage and works Casey to the mat. Straight to side control for Salter. Salter with 3 big right hands. Casey is moving but eats another couple of right hands. Knees to the body from Salter. Casey turtles and Salter is on his back trying to get his second hook in. Hammerfists from Salter from the top. Salter has both hooks in and is landing big shots from the top. Salter flattens him out and is landing unanswered punches and it’s over.

Thomas Campbell vs. Jeremy Wallace

Round 1 – Campbell comes forward and lands a big right hand, the works for the take down, and gets it. Full mount for Campbell and he’s landing huge punches from the top. Wallace turtles up, and Campbell takes his back and lands some elbows. Campbell flattens him out and is punishing him with right hands. Wallace bridges and tries to bump Campbell off, but lands right into a choke. Campbell looking to finish and does by RNC.

MAIN TELEVISED CARD

Rhadi Ferguson vs. John Richard

Round 1 – Richard comes out with a big left hand and clinches, then takes Ferguson down. Rhadi spins and grabs an ankle, and Richard scrambles, and is on the back of Ferguson. Big left hands from Richard from the top. Richard looking for the choke from the back. Ferguson is defending against the choke, and is controlling the wrist of Richard. Ferguson spins and is now on top. Rhadi lands some big right hands to the body. Rhadi with short hammerfists. Body-body-head from Rhadi. Big left hands from Rhadi from the top. Rhadi is punishing Richard now, as he turtles up to protect himself. Rhadi is continuing to punish Richard with 20 seconds to go. ProMMAnow scores Round 1 for Ferguson, 10-9.

Round 2 – Swing and a miss from Richard. He looks gassed. Leg kick from Ferguson. Leg kick from Richard, and Rhadi is down. Looks like he may have injured his knee. Richard is on top now landing big left hands. Rhadi rolls and grabs an ankle, but Richard is out for the moment.

Julia Budd vs. Amanda Nunes

Round 1 – Leg kick from Nunes and a big overhand right and they are throwing huge punches. Huge exchange and Nunes rocks Budd with a five punch combo, but it’s the left that does it and she’s down. Nunes continues the onslaught with a barrage of unanswered hammerfists before the referee can stop it.

Daniel Cormier vs. Devin Cole

Round 1 – Cole looking to land his right hand early. Cormier comes forward with a left hand then clinches briefly. Nice jab and huge overhand right lands for Cormier. To the clinch against the cage now. Cormier landing with uppercuts inside, then lands a kick, clinches, gets the take down. Cormier in in side mount now. Cole turns into him and Cormier grabs his neck. Cole scrambles and Cormier is on his back now. Cormier working the dirty boxing in the clinch now. Cole lands to the body. Cormier works for the trip take down, but doesn’t get it. More dirty boxing in the clinch. Both guys land right hands as they separate. Cormier comes forward with a big right hand, and punishing kicks. Cormier stalking now, and landing with power. Cole is on his back with Cormier on top landing bombs. Dominating first round for Cormier. ProMMAnow scores Round 1 for Cormier, 10-9.

Round 2 – Leg kick to start for Cormier. Cormier lands to the body with the right, and to the head with the left. Cormier changes levels to shoot but is stuffed. A scramble ensues, and Cormier is on top again. Cormier pins the seated Cole against the cage and lands a couple of right hands. Full  mount for Cormier now, but Cole uses the cage and kicks off. Cormier is still on top though, and is now in side mount. Cormier postures and delivers some punishment. Cole is a tough guy, he’s taking a beating. Cormier moves to the north-south position, Cole scrambles but is still in trouble. Cormier spins and takes his back. Cormier has his hooks in and is looking to finish with the rear naked. Cole survives but still has Cormier on his back. Cole grabs an arm and is looking for the kimura. He can’t finish it. End of round. ProMMAnow scores Round 2 for Cormier, 10-9.

Round 3 – Cole lands first with the jab. Leg kick by Cormier. Another jab for Cole. Cole comes forward and eats an uppercut. Cormier with a right hand right down the pipe. Cole with the uppercut, and Cormier is looking for the take down. Nice knee from Cole in the clinch. After a lull, the ref separates them, and they take the center of the cage. Nice right hand from Cole, and Cormier comes forward with a staggering right hand. Cole is down again, with Cormier on his back. Cole makes his way to his feet and puts Cormier on the cage. Short knees to the thigh from Cole. Cormier turns and puts Cole’s back on the cage. Short left hand, big right from Cormier.  More uppercuts from Cormier. Another sep from the ref. Cole comes forward and eats another uppercut as he puts Cormier against the cage. Cormier pushes forward, takes the fight to the mat. Cormier on top with :35 seconds to go. Round 1 – OSP hurts Abongo with the first punch and backs him up. Abongo grabs a leg, but ends up on bottom. OSP on top now in the guard of Abongo. Abongo scrambles but OSP maintains top control. Abongo very busy from the bottom. OSP stands and lands a huge left hand, then another. OSP in the half guard of Abongo. OSP looks to pass to sidemount and does. OSP goes for mount and Abongo scrambles then puts OSP on his back. OSP going for the triangle now. Abongo postures and is out of trouble. Abongo going for a leg, but OSP stands, but Abongo holds onto the ankle. OSP is in trouble with the leg, but he’s out and moves to full mount. Big left hands from OSP now. OSP goes for the arm triangle and is looking to finish it.  Abongo scrambles and is out but is still mounted. Good round for OSP. ProMMAnow scores the round for OSP, 10-9.

Round 2 – Abongo comes forward but is feinting. OSP lands a kick to the body then lands 4 or 5 monster left hands. OSP on top now against the cage. Short left hands from the top for OSP. Right hands to the body, lefts to the head. The referee sees a stall in the action, and stands them up. Abongo lands a right hand and now both of them are swinging for the fence. Abongo with a powerful uppercut that puts OSP against the cage. Big knees from Abongo and OSP turns and lands a left hand that backs up Abongo, then a knee in the clinch. OSP takes the fight down and is on top again. Right hands to the body from OSP. Hammerfists from OSP from the top. Another stand up by the ref. Back to the feet. Abongo misses with a big right, then eats a flush knee to the face. Head kick by Vince, and Abongo lands a big uppercut and right hand. OSP is down, and Abongo has the neck, then rolls to guard. Round 3 – Abongo to the body, and OSP lands another big knee as Abongo ducks in. Abongo grabs a leg and gets the take down. OSP reverses again. OSP is on the full guard of Abongo now. OSP with lefts to the body and head. OSP throwing body shots with the right. Abongo lands a big kick to the body of OSP and OSP counters with yet another knee. Abongo going for the guillotine from his back. OSP working to free his head. OSP passes to side mount. OSP now in the full guard of Abongo. More right hands to the body by OSP. The referee stands them up again. Leg kick from Abongo, OSP grabs the kick of Abongo and takes him down. OSP on top with :20 seconds to go. OSP finishes on top. Tyron Woodley vs. Tarec Saffiedine

Round 1 – Tyron strikes first with a right hand and a kick. To the clinch and Tyron lands some nice knees, as does Tarec. Tyron has Tarec pressed against the cage and lands a nice short knee. Tyron gets the body lock, then the take down and is now on top. Tarec gets back to his feet, and Tyron puts him right back on the cage as the ref calls for action. Tyron grabs a leg and goes for a single, but Tarec defends nicely and remains standing. Tyron with a knee to the body. The ref is calling for action again. The referee has seen enough and separates them. Woodley looks like something happened to his eye, but the ref tells him he has to fight, because he didn’t catch the eye poke. Tyron comes forward with kicks, then clinches. ProMMAnow scores Round 1 for Woodley, 10-9.

Round 2 – Tyron with a big right hand. Tarec comes forward with a nice kick, then clips Tyron with a right hand. Tarec has Tyron pressed against the cage. Both guys are firing short knees in the clinch. The ref is calling for work. Tyron does what the ref asks and takes the fight to the mat. Not much action from the top. Tyron is trying to pass the guard of Tarec. Tyron tries to get to side control but Tarec is looking to sweep, then retains full guard. Tarec has a very active guard from his back. Tarec is working with his back against the cage and gives Tyron just enough space to take his back, but Tarec is defending well. Close 2nd but it goes to Tyron, 10-9.

Round 3 – Tarec coming forward and now we have a big exchange. Nice kick from Tarec, then both guys trade big punches. To the clinch again, with Tarec pressing Woodley against the cage. Big uppercut from Tyron as they disengage. Tyron shoots for a single, but is stuffed. Tarec pulls his leg free and turns into Tyron, and is now on top. Elbows to the body from Tarec. Tyron works back to his feet and fires a knee on his way back to the clinch. Tarec turns him and puts Tyron into the cage. Tough, grinding round. Tarec to the body with the right hand. Tarec steps back and fires a head kick that Tyron ducks. Tyron grabs the leg and gets the slam. Tyron holding onto the leg of Tarec as Saffiedine looks to escape. The referee calls for action. Tarec scrambles, makes his way to his feet, and they clinch again. The ref separates them. Tyron fires a right hand and eats a kick. Tarec lands a big right hand flush but Tyron doesn’t look hurt. Tarec puts Tyron into the cage now with :30 seconds to go. They disengage but only for a second. Saffiedine comes forward with a knee and kick at the bell. ProMMAnow scores the final round for Saffiedine, 10-9, but the fight overall to Woodley, 29-28.
