Once a top contender for the UFC heavyweight title, Gabriel Gonzaga (11-6) announced via Twitter today that he has been released from the promotion after losing three of his last four fights.

Most recently, Gonzaga lost a unanimous decision to Brendan Schaub at UFC 121 last Saturday. Schaub frustrated Gonzaga with his boxing and the Brazilian heavyweight seemed to run out of energy in the second and third rounds.

Gonzaga won his first four UFC fights, including a memorable head kick KO of Mirko Cro Cop at UFC 70. That led to a shot against then-champion Randy Couture at UFC 74, but Gonzaga suffered a third round TKO loss and only managed to go 3-3 over his next six fights.
