With a UFC 120 main event bout with Michael Bisping (20-3)  looming, Yoshihiro Akiyama (13-2, 2 NC) is working with renowned trainer Greg Jackson and his impressive stable of fighters in Albuquerque, N.M., according to Sherdog.com.

Akiyama, a former K-1 and DREAM standout in Japan, won his UFC debut with a split decision over Alan Belcher at UFC 100. But after a layoff of almost a year, Akiyama was submitted in the third round of a grueling, back-and-forth bout with Chris Leben at UFC 116 on July 3.

On October 16 in London, Akiyama will try to upend Bisping in his own backyard. Bisping has won two of his last three since a knockout loss  to Dan Henderson, also on the UFC 100 card.

As Dan Miller found out on May 29 at UFC 114, standing on the outside of Bisping’s range and engaging in a tactical striking battle isn’t the best strategy. However, Akiyama brings a bit more kickboxing acumen and a good amount of power to the table, not to mention a dangerous judo game.

Changing camps doesn’t always pay dividends immediately. But in Jackson, Akiyama will team with one of the best game-planners in the sport. Recently Jackson cornered Rashad Evans to a decision win over Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, beautifully combining his boxing and wrestling to frustrate Rampage for much of the fight.
