At only 31-years-old, Takanori Gomi could be the fighter the UFC needs to carry their torch into Japan.

“The Fireball Kid” Takanori Gomi (32-6, 1 NC) says he still can’t believe how his fight against Tyson Griffin ended Sunday night at UFC on Versus 2 in San Diego. Gomi became the first person to ever finish Griiffin, who was left laying face down on in the middle of the Octagon after taking one of Gomi’s big right hooks to the chin.

Gomi says he has not changed technically as a fighter since his last bout but he is in much better shape. He says he worked really hard on conditioning, a lot of sparring, and he was not going to tire out or beat himself in the fight with Griffin.

In a rather surprising admittance, Gomi says that if he is really going to compete seriously in the UFC, it is pretty much a necessity that he begins training full time in the United States and says that is probably what he is going to do. Gomi also says he would like to be the flagship star to help the UFC break into Japan. Good stuff from FIGHT! Magazine’s Danny Acosta.

Here’s more from “The Fireball Kid” as he has a laugh talking about jumping on top of the Octagon after the fight. He says the UFC staff was not too thrilled with him about that and says he will have to try to control himself next time. This and uch more.

  1. Fuck the UFC staff. Let the kid swag surf. He’s known for that in PRIDE. He deserves it after this impressive KO.
