I didn’t know Strikeforce released fighters, but according to this new press release they have let go the NY Badass himself, Phil Baroni. There are reports saying he is likely headed to the UFC, but it seems very odd that Dana White would pick up Strikeforce’s scraps. Doesn’t it usually work the other way around? Anyway, here’s the press release:

SAN JOSE, Calif. (Aug. 13, 2009) – Phil “The New York Badass” Baroni has been released by world championship mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion STRIKEFORCE.

The 33-year-old Baroni, a native of Long Island, N.Y, has lost four of his last seven bouts. In his last appearance, a welterweight (170 pounds) matchup with Joe “Diesel’’ Riggs at St. Louis, Missouri’s Scottrade Center, Baroni sustained a one-sided defeat by way of unanimous judges’ decision.

“We wish Phil the best of luck and hope he can revive his career,’’ STRIKEFORCE Founder and CEO Scott Coker said Thursday. “If he can, maybe one day, he can return and fight for us.”

Baroni’s most noteworthy fight in STRIKEFORCE was also the first STRIKEFORCE middleweight (185 pounds) MMA championship bout in history on June 22, 2007. Refusing to tap out, Baroni was choked unconscious by four-time world champion Frank Shamrock in the second round (4:00) of action.

  1. Phil Baroni is an ass clown. He lost at PFC, he lost at Strikeforce. Tell me WTF Dana White is thinking bringing him into his promotion? My guess is it’s last minute hype Baroni is trying to spin to save his fledgling career.

In the interest of full disclosure, I hate the guy. But for the record, the guy’s record is highly suspect. Tell me who would possibly take him onto their promotion at this point? Having a six pack does not make you an MMA fighter. Maybe someone should tell him that.

  2. I agree Chris. I can’t see how in the world the UFC would take him. I think it’s just a way to give him some hype.

  3. The UFC is just signing Strikeforce people as part of their new war with SF. Just look they have picked up Hallman and now Baroni, taking them from SF is the only answer.
