At 14-0, UFC Light Heavyweight fighter Lyoto Machida is one of the most feared men in all the world. He is known as a fast an elusive fighter who receives minimal amounts of damage during his battles.

In fact, there is a very good chance he could be the next UFC Light Heavyweight Champion of the World when he faces Rashad Evans on May 23 at UFC 98.

MMA fighters are known and respected for being some of the best athletes in the world. Walk into the average top ten MMA fighter’s home and you are bound to find numerous nutritional supplements, health foods, and protein shakes. However, when you open up the refrigerator of Lyoto Machida, you may get a surprise you were not prepared for.

Lyoto Machida drinks his own urine. No, “urine” is not the name of the latest energy drink dreamt up by some young marketing guru. It is actually the human excrement most men drain into the toilet each morning upon rising, but not Lyoto Machida. If there is a female in Machida’s life, at least she does not have to worry about the “seat being left up.” For her it would be making sure “the lid was screwed on tight.”

Actually we are not quite sure if he stores it in a mason jar or drinks it through a straw in a cup. One thing is for sure though, it will be one of the first questions PRO MMA (promma.info) will ask Mr. Machida if and when we get the pleasure of meeting him.

When Hank Williams Jr. sang about “Family Tradition” chances are sharing a potent pint of good ol’ morning urine with your son was not what he had in mind. Even so, Lyoto talks about learning it from his father, “My father does that for a long time and bring it to us. People think it’s a joke (laughs). I never said it in the United States because I don’t know how the fans will react (laughs). I drink my urine every morning like a natural medicine.”

Machida is not the only UFC fighter who drinks his own urine but he is the most successful. The 6-6 TUF veteran, Luke Cummo is also a fan of the foamy froth, “I drink all that I can of my own urine. It has many advantages. It contains hormones, minerals, and elements that bind moisture to protein. Basically it is a recycling of things so that they can have another chance to get where they are destined. If you were to drink something, your body will want to excrete liquid in order to maintain a certain level of hydration. So it filters the blood and the urine may contain things that didn’t get a chance to get where they were going.”

When Cummo talked about drinking the mellow yellow most people just thought he was very strange and it fit with his character and unfortunately, it was hard to believe it gave him any benefit due to his fight record.

Now we have the number two ranked light heavyweight fighter in the world declaring it one of his great family secrets. Could we really see this catch on? In today’s age where everything and anything can become marketable, do not be surprised if you walk into a health food store one day and find a bottle of “organic urine” right next to the orange juice.
